Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Dietitian at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust to join the Dietetics Department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. You will be responsible for providing specialist dietetic care for patients with Type 1 diabetes in outpatient settings and delivering nutritional support across acute and community services to facilitate timely discharge and early patient care. You will be managing specialised nutritional assessments and treatment plans for patients requiring dietetic interventions within diabetes services, while supporting dietitians, dietetic assistants, student dietitians, and the wider multidisciplinary team. You will also be responsible for maintaining and developing your clinical knowledge and practical expertise in dietetics and nutritional support to ensure high standards of patient care and effective service delivery.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Dietitian, you will be responsible for interpreting biochemical results, anthropometric measurements, clinical findings, and dietary histories to establish nutritional diagnoses and formulate tailored dietary care plans. You will be managing individualised feeding regimens, calculating nutritional requirements, and setting measurable, patient-centred goals to improve dietary intake and clinical outcomes. You will be supporting the implementation of dietetic interventions within Accident and Emergency and short-stay wards, helping identify nutritional concerns early and facilitating appropriate treatment. You will also be responsible for applying specialist clinical judgement when determining suitable interventions for patients with complex needs, coordinating care plans with relevant healthcare professionals, and contributing to a seamless approach to patient care across different stages of the healthcare pathway.

Job description

  • To use counselling and motivational interviewing techniques to empower individuals to make informed dietary choices and develop sustainable lifestyle habits. To review the effectiveness of these approaches and adapt motivational strategies to encourage long-term adherence to recommended dietary changes.
  • To maintain professional practice in accordance with HCPC requirements, Trust policies, departmental procedures, and British Dietetic Association (BDA) guidance. To remain updated on national and local standards, current clinical evidence, and best-practice recommendations to ensure professional accountability and continuous improvement.
  • To operate anthropometric equipment, including weighing and wheelchair scales, height measures, and skinfold callipers, ensuring accurate measurements and consistent data collection. To contribute to patient care pathway development and collect patient contact information for audit purposes as requested by the Dietetic Team Lead.
  • To maintain accurate, timely, and accessible patient documentation in paper and electronic formats, ensuring compliance with organisational and professional standards. To safeguard confidential information, follow relevant IT policies, and record service activity accurately within designated Trust systems.
  • To communicate complex or sensitive information to patients, carers, GPs, referrers, and other healthcare professionals using appropriate verbal, written, electronic, and visual methods. To identify and overcome communication barriers, provide timely progress updates, recommend onward referrals where appropriate, and maintain effective professional relationships across health and social care services.
  • To participate in service audits and relevant research projects, sharing findings with appropriate stakeholders to support service evaluation. To identify educational needs, deliver and evaluate training for patients, carers, and healthcare professionals, provide clinical supervision to placement students and departmental colleagues, and complete mandatory training and the Trust appraisal process.
