Respiratory LED Higher – Solihull and Community Respiratory ServicesNHS
Job summary
The Respiratory Registrar will support the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centered respiratory care for the population of Solihull and East Birmingham, with a specific focus on integrated working across acute, community, primary care, urgent community response, respiratory virtual ward and locality hub pathways. The post has been developed to strengthen the clinical interface between hospital respiratory services and community-based respiratory care, supporting earlier intervention, avoidance of unnecessary hospital admission and safe escalation where specialist consultant input is required.
The post holder will work in partnership with the Solihull Community Respiratory Team, Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust, Virtual Wards, Urgent Community Response, Locality Hubs, primary care colleagues, acute respiratory services and wider neighbourhood partners. The role will contribute to assessment, treatment planning, review and escalation for people with respiratory deterioration or complex respiratory need, including patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, bronchiectasis, breathlessness, recurrent chest infection and other long-term respiratory conditions.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will contribute to respiratory admission avoidance and care closer to home by providing registrar-level clinical input into multidisciplinary case discussion, virtual ward decision-making, community respiratory pathway coordination, diagnostics, treatment optimisation and step-up or step-down arrangements. The role is not intended to replace consultant respiratory oversight; rather, it will operate within a consultant-supported governance model, escalating complex clinical decisions appropriately and ensuring that patients receive the right level of care in the right setting.
The post offers an opportunity to work across an innovative integrated respiratory model within Solihull, supporting both reactive pathways for deteriorating patients and proactive approaches for people at risk of deterioration. The post holder will also contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, education and pathway development, ensuring that respiratory services continue to develop in line with UHB values, national clinical guidance and local population need.
