The Plater Scholarship in Catholic Social Thought, Campion Hall, Oxford

Campion Hall, Oxford’s Jesuit Permanent Private Hall, is delighted to invite applications for the Plater Scholarship in Catholic Social Thought, for Home (UK) students on a Master’s programme in the Faculty of Theology and Religion, entering in 2027. The scholarship will support a talented student with an interest in Catholic social thought, on either the 21-month MPhil in Theology (which might be Christian Ethics, but open field) or the 24-month MTh in Applied Theology in the Faculty of Theology and Religion. It covers full course fees and a maintenance stipend of £15,000 per year (pro rata). The Plater Scholar will be based at Campion Hall where Charles Plater SJ, an early champion of Catholic Social thought, was Master between 1915 and 1921.

The scholarship-holder's research and analysis will engage with Catholic social thought, with its emphasis on human dignity, the common good, solidarity with the excluded and care for our common home. It has much to contribute to the most pressing ethical questions of our time, from the development of artificial intelligence to the climate and ecological crisis. In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the Hall’s development of community service and partnerships, in collaboration with research fellows based here. The scholarship is intended as formation in applied research and community engagement, and priority will be given to excellent candidates who could not otherwise access postgraduate study. The scholarship is generously co-funded by the Plater Trust, the Michael and Megan Dent Charitable Foundation, and the Faculty of Theology and Religion.

Candidates should apply for the MPhil or MTh in the usual way, through the Oxford graduate application process. More information here. For consideration for the Plater scholarship, please mention this in your application and send a statement of your interest (no more than 500 words) to the Senior Tutor at Campion Hall, [email protected]. Do contact the Senior Tutor if you have any questions about the scholarship. First-choice applicants to other colleges should be prepared to move to Campion Hall to take up the scholarship. Please find out more about graduate life at Campion here.
