Job summary

A registered nurse or HCPC registered professional will provide and manage the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support specialist service for patients, families and their carers, ensuring access to high quality support and information to all. They will be required to support the development of evidence-based cancer information for the trust and work with colleagues across the integrated care board and cancer alliance if required. They will collaborate with the site-specific teams to ensure that information and support meets patient need /support, acting as a key focal point to support the development of local information, support strategies and promotion of the cancer information centre.

Main duties of the job

This great opportunity allows you to use your advanced communication skills, cancer knowledge and experience in supporting patients, families and their carers on their cancer journey within the cancer information centre, outpatients, as an inpatient or through community working. From the worried well to those with palliative care needs, your service will be an additional support service allowing you to work along the cancer clinical teams for the needs of our patients/ carers or relatives. You will provide them with the information and support that is required be able to refer to the necessary teams or agencies.

You will work with cancer services, Integrated Care Boards, and the West Midlands Cancer Alliance, Macmillan Cancer Support and gain patient feedabck . This will allow the continual developing of the centre through promotion and development of support groups or information as required.

Job description

  • You must hold a Registered Healthcare Professional qualification (e.g. Registered General Nurse, Radiotherapist, Chartered Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist -Health Care Professions Council qualification)
  • To act as an expert resource, providing a timely and specialist information and support service to patients, relatives, carers and members of the multidisciplinary teams
  • To work in collaboration with others to manage and organise cancer support groups if required
  • To lead in the provision of cancer information developing and promoting new and innovative projects e.g. Living with and Beyond Cancer, HOPE trainer
  • You will have highly developed communication skills enabling maintenance of a high-quality Macmillan Cancer and Information and Support service and ensuring timely management and resolution of unexpected events and situations.
  • To liaise with other Cancer Information and Support Centres and charities within the region to promote uniformity of information and support services.
  • Establish links with each cancer MDT within UHCW and work with them to ensure consistent high-quality information is delivered to cancer patients across the Trust.
  • Work in close liaison with the volunteer manager to develop volunteering roles within the Macmillan Cancer and Information and Support Centre, and ensure volunteer cover as required supporting the activities of the service.
  • To manage the cancer information navigator in all human resources aspects and supporting as required
  • Develop evidence-based standards, policies and guidelines at a local, network and national level to improve the practice of nursing and other professions.
  • To be responsible for the overall management of the Macmillan Cancer and Information and Support service, utilising appropriate evaluation tools to record activity and to produce an annual report for the Organisation and Macmillan Cancer Support
  • To work and liaise within the community setting regarding promotion of the centre, working with community groups as required
  • To deliver outreach at the peripheral sites such as the Hospital of St Cross as required.
  • Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available, maintaining a database of current cancer and supportive information resources.
  • Responsibility for the continuous development of the Macmillan Information and Support Centre ensuring an accessible and equitable service e.g. undertaking audit, research and service user feedback.
  • To collect and submit data as required for both Macmillan and also UHCW.
  • To ensure quality standards for information and support provision within the Macmillan Cancer and Information and Support centre are established and adhered to and to lead on the MQuISS standards at UHCW NHS TRUST.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
