Job summary

You may be an experienced Phlebotomist who would like to learn new skills to become a Healthcare Assistant, or you may already be working as a Healthcare Assistant in primary care.

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, enjoys providing excellent care and ensure patients are always put first.

Good time management skills and the ability to thrive in a busy environment are key. Excellent written & verbal communication abilities are a must. You will also maintain privacy, confidentiality, dignity, and ensure the patient is well looked after.

The post is for a permanent contract working 28 hours per week across Monday to Friday - day off Tuesday.

Main duties of the job

The role will include taking blood samples (phlebotomy), measuring and recording blood pressure, performing 12-lead ECGs, carrying out NHS Health Checks, recording accurate clinical observations and updating patient records, providing patients with appropriate information and support, preparing and maintaining clinical rooms and equipment, following infection prevention and control procedures, working closely with GPs, nurses and other members of the team, supporting the practice with other appropriate clinical and administrative duties.

  • To assist clinical personnel in the care of practice patients, to include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education. The post will also include some administrative duties, Infection control and prevention duties in line with surgery policy and as delegated by the Senior HCA or Practice Manager.
  • They will act as a focal point of communication between patients, doctors, nurses and other members of the primary health care team.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Phlebotomy
  • Taking and recording blood pressures
  • Performing ECGs
  • Carrying out NHS Health Checks
  • Recording accurate clinical observations and updating patient records
  • Preparing and maintaining clinical treatment rooms and equipment
  • Following infection control procedures
  • Urinalysis
  • Administer injections when trained and competent to do so as per surgery guidelines
  • Assist with monitoring of long term conditions when trained and competent to do so
  • Provide lifestyle advice to patients making any necessary referrals within the practice
  • Weight monitoring
  • Ensure specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary paperwork completed
  • Ensure clinical waste collection runs smoothly, reporting any problems to the Senior HCA or Practice Manager
  • Ensure sharps bins are ready for collection
  • Other clinical tasks as directed by the Senior HCA or Practice Manager.

Administration and professional responsibilities

  • Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team
  • Ensure accurate and legible notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients records
  • Ensure that medical records are completed at time of consultation and are accurate and that confidentiality is respected in line with surgery policy
  • Ensure the clinical computer system is kept up to date with accurate details recorded
  • Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the practice
  • Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports
  • Ensure infection control and prevention policies are adhered to in full, noting the practices bare below the elbow and jewellery policies.
  • Ensure necessary cleaning of areas within the clinical room that you're working in are carried out between each patient and at the end of the shift.
  • Ensure cleaning rotas are completed and signed for on a daily/weekly/monthly basis as per cleaning schedules.
  • Attend and participate in practice meetings as required
  • Assist in formulation of practice philosophy, strategy and policy
  • Restocking and maintenance of equipment, clinical areas and consulting rooms
  • To assist in seasonal and special projects as requested e.g. flu campaign
  • Ordering and display of health promotion materials in line with national health promotion campaigns
  • Other administrative tasks as directed by the Practice Manager

Management of appointment system

  • Ensure total familiarity with all appointment systems, including regular and incidental variations
  • Book appointments and recalls, ensuring sufficient information is recorded to enable retrieval of the medical record
  • Monitor flow of patients into the waiting room, ensuring the appointment system accurately reflects the arrival of patients
  • Monitor effectiveness of the system and report any problems or variations
