Job summary
We are pleased to invite applications for the post of Specialty Doctor in Oncology, based at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust within the Worcestershire Oncology Centre. This is a 12-month fixed-term opportunity to join a friendly, supportive and forward-looking oncology team.
The successful applicant will work alongside our Consultant Oncologists and wider multidisciplinary team, supporting chemotherapy and radiotherapy services, outpatient clinics across our hospital sites, the oncology ward and the provision of Acute Oncology services. The post also offers opportunities to contribute to teaching, clinical research and audit.
Main duties of the job
This is a rotational post, with the successful applicant spending six months working with each of two Consultant Oncologists over the 12-month appointment, offering valuable breadth of experience across the service. For six months, the successful applicant will be attached to a Consultant Oncologist caring for patients with colorectal and lung cancers and neuroendocrine tumours (NETs). They will then be rotating to work with a Consultant Oncologist managing patients with breast, upper gastrointestinal and renal cancers. Throughout both placements, the postholder will be expected see new patients, treatment-review patients and follow-up patients, with opportunities to gain experience in clinical assessment, treatment planning, toxicity management, surveillance and supportive care.
The role includes weekend ward cover on a 1:4 rota, between 9am and 5pm.
The Worcestershire Oncology Centre opened in early 2015 on the Worcestershire Royal Hospital site and offers modern facilities, including state-of-the-art radiotherapy equipment. Our Oncology Department is dynamic, approachable and collaborative, with a strong commitment to delivering high-quality specialist cancer care across the three hospital sites within our large acute Trust: Worcester, Redditch and Kidderminster.
Job description
This job description, together with the job plan, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Medical Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.
A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide an appropriate clinical service in the relevant specialty to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.
The post-holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and job plans may be revised in due course.
The post-holder will provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital, whilst covering AOS duties.
The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.
The post-holder will attend cross county and cross site meetings. To collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trust's and departmental objectives.
The post-holder will participate in the oncology weekend on call rota 0900-1700.
The Trust would expect a Specialty Doctor whilst undertaking non-resident on-call duties to attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary. The Specialty Doctor on call must be prepared to attend willingly whenever requested to do so by a member of their medical and nursing team.
