Applications are warmly invited for the position of Substantive Consultant in Anaesthesia with a specialist interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia, to join our dynamic and thriving A.C.S.A. accredited anaesthetic department at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust.

We are looking for committed anaesthetists of proven ability who can contribute fully to both clinical and managerial roles within the department. Candidates should bring skills or knowledge that will enhance and expand the services already provided at the Royal United Hospital. An ability to embrace change and develop services for more effective care delivery will be considered an asset.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will work clinically at the RUH (Royal United Hospital) Combe Park site and at Sulis Hospital (owned by the RUH). This post is a standard 10PA contract. Comprising 8.5 PAs Direct Clinical Care (including on call) and 1.5PAs Supporting Professional Activities in line with the national Consultant contract.

The clinical work will include elective and emergency operating lists across a broad range of surgical specialties (except for cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, vascular, burns, transplant, and major trauma) plus pre-operative assessment and peri-operative care.

This job includes a specialist interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia. The maternity services at the RUH have been rated as Outstanding by the CQC in the last 2 assessments. An annual delivery rate of nearly 5000 births and Caesarean Birth rate of 40% are managed by close multidisciplinary working and a culture of continued improvement and development of services, of which anaesthesia is a key contributor. The teams work closely with the Local Maternity Service and are active participants in the regional maternity neonatal patient safety collaborative. The RUH maternity research team is very active in both local and national research

Job description

Clinical Duties: The holder of this post will be a Substantive Consultant Anaesthetist. The post will be based at the RUH, and the holder will participate in audit and directorate meetings and undertake administrative duties as required by the Clinical Lead for Anaesthesia. A commitment to maintain professional expertise by attendance at meetings and courses is expected, and completion of diaries for CME is essential. It is mandatory that you have an annual appraisal. Our rotas are published as early in advance as possible and we undertake to make the flexible element of the program as varied as possible, but this post will include specific regular obstetric sessions. There may be a variety of the following lists: general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, day-case surgery, urology, ENT, gynaecology, ophthalmology, dental and onco-plastic breast surgery. The department uses the CLW electronic rota management programme. Management Duties: The post holder will be expected to work with local managers, professional colleagues and allied medical professionals to ensure the safe and efficient running of services. The successful candidate would be appointed with a view to the progression into the role of Obstetric Anaesthetic Lead and should have a passion for the ongoing development of obstetric anaesthesia and maternity services. Consultants are required to undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of clinical areas where they work. General Requirements: Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, the post holder will be expected to observe the Trust's agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the standing orders, financial instructions, and code of expectations of the Trust. Work Programme The work programme will be reviewed on a regular basis and agreed with the post holder, Divisional Manager and Clinical Lead for Anaesthesia following appointment. Where possible a regular timetable will be established, however the nature of the post requires the post holder to be flexible to maximise theatre and clinic capacity, this may include time shifting to weekend elective work. Our standard theatre day is 10 hours (2.5 PAs), but the appointee will also be expected to work planned 12-hour theatre days (3 PAs) on occasion. Should the successful candidate wish to maintain or develop a special interest, this will be accommodated within the constraints of service provision. Local procedures will be followed in the event of any disagreement over proposed changes, culminating in an appeal to the Trust Board. The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out consultants' duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the duration of the appointment. It will cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education, clinical governance, and any other responsibilities.
