Job summary

The Ophthalmology department in UHB is spread across 4 sites -- Queen Elizabeth hospital, Good Hope hospital with the responsible hospital being Solihull hospital. The Department covers a breadth of Ophthalmology Services including Glaucoma, Cornea, Medical Retina, Paediatric Ophthalmology, VR Surgery and General Ophthalmology. The department consists of 37 consultants across the sites.

Clinical sessions deemed clinical activities are by definition 4 hours and the successful appointee will be expected to work flexibly.

The successful candidate is expected to have a minimum of 4 years post-graduate training in general ophthalmology and in addition have further training and experience in managing glaucoma patients. The successful applicant is expected to have a good understanding of modern glaucoma management and be capable of managing routine glaucoma cases. Clinical experience of managing acute glaucoma and complex glaucoma cases is essential for this post. The applicant should also be able to undertake routine cataract surgery, glaucoma laser treatment (SLT, YAG, Diode) and glaucoma surgery.

The post will be supported, depending on hospital site, by:

Good Hope / Solihull / Heartlands site: Ms Anju Kadyan, Mr Anil Negi, Mr Thomas Ressiniotis.

QEH site: Mr Simon Dulku, Mr Shabbir Mohamed, Mr Mark Sigona, Miss Vaneeta Sood, Ms Madalina Pavel

The consultant will also be responsible to the Clinical Service Lead

Main duties of the job

The department provides ophthalmology services to a large part of the Birmingham population and is a busy department. There is ample opportunity to see a wide spectrum of cases.

The glaucoma service manages adult patients with the whole spectrum of glaucoma. There is scope to perform the full range of glaucoma procedures including SLT and YAG laser, complex cataract surgery in glaucoma patients, minimally invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), Trabeculectomy, Preserflo and Tube Surgery under both general and local anaesthesia.

The successful post holder will have experience in managing acute and complex clinical, laser and surgical management of glaucoma patients.

All aspects of ophthalmology with a specialist interest in Ophthalmology:

Capacity to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and demonstrate leadership where appropriate.

Manage time and prioritise workload

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Governance:

a.Ensures service delivery by the department is within the resources available.

b.Helps manage demand and prioritises based on urgent ophthalmology cases as required.

c.Demonstrates excellence in patient quality care.

d.To cover for ophthalmology colleagues as required during time of leave to maintain a good service.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills:

a.The post holder must be willing to join an established collaborative department which involves working closely with colleagues from all four sites to provide a comprehensive and cohesive service.

b.Contribute to the design and implementation of service by applying the latest evidence and delivering high-quality patient care.

c.Have excellent report/letter writing skills and be able to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues. To develop and maintain effective networks within the region enabling best practice to be identified and implemented by the Trust.

d.The post holder must have well-developed listening and communication skills and be able to interact effectively with a wide range of clinicians, managers and professionals both within and outside the Trust.

Planning and organising:

a.Contribute to the discussion on the future development of ophthalmology services within the department.

b.Support the development of a culture of continuous improvement.

c.Effectively plan, communicate and execute changes ensuring engagement and involvement.

d.Support the department in achieving its financial and performance targets.

Administrative support

a.Shared office space and shared administrative support will be provided.

This job description will be subject to review and amendment, in consultation with the post holder, to meet the changing needs of the service and the organisation.

The post holder is required to be flexible in developing the role in accordance with changes within the Trust 's management agenda and priorities.
