Job summary
For the purposes of this job description this clinical fellowship is intended to allow a neurosurgical trainee to obtain experience over 12 months in Neuro Vascular Surgery sub-specialties. This post will provide extensive experience, more than sufficient to permit a successful fellow to present themselves to apply for a substantive consultant position in these specialist areas of neurosurgery.
Main duties of the job
The Fellow's duties will comprise assistance with the care of patients on the wards, assistance in the operating theatre, attendance at appropriate clinics and review of appropriate literature and clinical data. A timetable for these activities is set out below, as is a list of possible review and research topics.
In addition, the Fellow will be given an opportunity to take part in the general neurosurgical activities, and will contribute to the SpR duty rota on an equal basis with other SpRs. The duties of the regular SpRs are set out below for information.
It is expected that the post holder will be taking an active role in identifying neurovascular patients and supporting the neurovascular surgeons in the management of these patients.
Job description
The fellows duties will consist of care of patients on the wards, assistance in the operating theatre, attendance at appropriate clinics and a close collaboration with the clinical nurse specialists is expected. They are also expected to conduct regular review of appropriate literature and clinical data.
The fellow will be second on call, 1 in 6, with two junior colleagues, as part of the general neurosurgical rota. The department currently has a staffing of 16 specialist trainees. At present these consist of seven SpRs with National Training Numbers and nine clinical neurosurgical fellows. To maintain compliance with junior doctors hours, a 1 in 11 full shift rota is in place.
