The University of Birmingham is a public research university in Birmingham, England. It received its royal charter in 1900 as a successor to Queen's College, Birmingham, and Mason Science College, making it the first English redbrick university to receive its own royal charter, and the first English unitary university. It is a founding member of both the Russell Group of British research universities and the international network of research universities, Universitas 21.

This is a fully funded 3-year PhD studentship to join the group of Dr Tianyi Zhang in the Department of Cancer and Genomics Sciences to investigate molecular mechanisms of genome regulation in multiple myeloma. Precise gene regulation is essential for normal development and is frequently subverted…
Advances in manufacturing science have resulted in unprecedented research and development in the design of ‘micro-swimmers’: microscopic entities that navigate fluid environments by converting some form of energy–e.g. electrical, magnetic, acoustic, or chemical–into mechanical motion. These…
Most biological drugs cannot be given orally because of their poor oral bioavailability, necessitating delivery by injection instead. This is because features of the gastrointestinal tract that prevent infection, such as a thick mucus layer and tight epithelial junctions, also block large…
The transition to electrified transport and renewable energy storage is driving unprecedented growth in battery manufacturing. However, large-scale battery production generates significant quantities of manufacturing scrap, including coated electrode off-cuts and rejected cells, which contain…
Some of the biggest open questions in modern physics concern the limits of the Standard Model and General Relativity. The nature of dark matter and dark energy remains unknown, and many theories attempting to tackle this problem predict that the fundamental constants may vary in space or time.…
Swallowable sensors are limited by how long they stay in place. A capsule passes through the gut within a day or two, so it can only take a snapshot when conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease need to be tracked over weeks without the risk of obstruction. Devices that stay longer exist, but…
Thermal batteries (often termed primary reserve batteries) offer several key advantages over primary and secondary batteries due to their long shelf life, high temperature stability, quick activation, reliability, robustness and the fact that they are maintenance-free. Despite these many…

Statistical methods are leveraged in many scientific applications to: specify a data collection practice (experimental design), draw conclusions from sparse and noisy data (inference), and assess uncertainty about those conclusions (uncertainty quantification). Bayesian inference and experimental…
Parametric integrators approximate solutions of (high-dimensional) partial differential equations by restricting the numerical approximation to a closed form that nonlinearly depends on, and is identified by, a set of parameters. Such methods are a popular choice in quantum dynamics, where the…
