Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an Advanced Hand Therapist at Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust to join the Occupational Therapy Department. You will be responsible for providing skilled team leadership in planning and delivering high standards of hand therapy assessment, management, treatment, and advice to patients following elective hand surgery, acute trauma, or chronic conditions. You will manage and support the advanced assessment and treatment of patients with complex or multi-pathology presentations, determining the most appropriate care pathways in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT). You will work as an autonomous professional, adhering to the standards of care and professional conduct set by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) or the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).

Main duties of the job

As an Advanced Hand Therapist, you will be responsible for undertaking service reviews and audits to evaluate quality, efficiency, and outcomes, implementing changes to ensure high standards of clinical practice and patient care are maintained. You will manage and develop professional relationships locally, regionally, and nationally, contributing to the development of clinical pathways relevant to hand therapy. You will also be responsible for supervising, teaching, and appraising junior therapists, non-qualified therapy staff, students to graduate level, and MDT colleagues, ensuring excellence in patient care within this specialty.

Job description

  • To continue to develop highly specialist clinical skills, knowledge, and experience through hands-on practice, in-service training sessions, and targeted Personal Development activities identified in the Personal Development Plan.
  • To maintain personal professional status and accountability by ensuring compliance with all requirements set by relevant professional bodies for registration and licensure, and by adhering to departmental and Trust policies.
  • To plan and deliver departmental training and educational sessions for staff, promoting professional and personal development across the team, with support from senior colleagues where required.
  • To ensure effective communication with patients, carers, and all members of the MDT regarding patient conditions, including accurate documentation in line with Trust policies and professional codes of practice.
  • To mentor, guide, and assess the development of junior therapists, non-qualified therapy staff, and students, ensuring that the team maintains high standards of patient care and clinical practice.
  • To actively contribute to service improvement initiatives including planned research, audits, and clinical governance, using findings to enhance patient care and service delivery within the hand therapy specialty.
