Main duties of the job

  • Provide high-quality, patient-centred medical care to patients registered with the practice.
  • Undertake face-to-face, telephone, and online consultations, assessing, diagnosing, and managing a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.
  • Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with national and local guidelines.
  • Manage patients with long-term conditions and contribute to preventative healthcare initiatives.
  • Review and act upon laboratory results, correspondence, and clinical reports in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and contemporaneous clinical records.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team, including nurses, pharmacists, physician associates, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in safeguarding processes and fulfil statutory responsibilities relating to vulnerable adults and children.
  • Contribute to quality improvement activities, clinical audits, and practice development initiatives.
  • Support the achievement of Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) and other contractual requirements where appropriate.
  • Participate in practice meetings and contribute to the ongoing development of services.
  • Adhere to GMC standards, NHS policies, and practice procedures, ensuring the highest standards of clinical governance and patient safety.
  • Engage in continuing professional development (CPD) and maintain revalidation requirements.

Job description

  • Provide comprehensive medical services to registered patients, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic conditions.
  • Undertake face-to-face, telephone, and video consultations as appropriate.
  • Carry out home visits when clinically indicated.
  • Prescribe medications safely and cost-effectively in accordance with national and local guidelines.
  • Request, interpret, and act upon diagnostic investigations and test results.
  • Make appropriate referrals to secondary care and community services.
  • Provide health promotion, preventative care, and lifestyle advice.
  • Manage patients with complex and long-term conditions.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical records using the practice clinical system.
  • Participate in safeguarding children and vulnerable adults in accordance with local and national policies.
  • Contribute to the management of urgent and same-day care.

Multidisciplinary Team Working

  • Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, pharmacists, physician associates, healthcare assistants, social prescribers, and other members of the primary care team.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings where appropriate.
  • Liaise effectively with community services, hospitals, and external healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care.

Quality Improvement and Clinical Governance

  • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement projects, and service development.
  • Support the practice in achieving Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) and other contractual requirements.
  • Contribute to significant event reviews, clinical governance, and risk management activities.
  • Maintain awareness of current national guidance and best practice.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain full registration and licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Comply with the standards set out in Good Medical Practice.
  • Participate in annual appraisal and professional revalidation.
  • Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) in line with GMC requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with practice policies, NHS regulations, and information governance standards.

Teaching and Training

  • Support the education and supervision of medical students, trainee GPs, and other healthcare professionals where appropriate.
  • Share knowledge and contribute to the learning and development of colleagues.

Health and safety

  • Comply with all health and safety legislation and practice policies.
  • Promote infection prevention and control standards.
  • Report incidents, accidents, and near misses in accordance with practice procedures

Safeguarding & Risk Management

  • Recognise and escalate safeguarding concerns in line with practice policy.
  • Identify patients and carers at risk of crisis and alert appropriate clinicians.
  • Ensure confidentiality and data protection standards are always maintained.

General Responsibilities

  • Work within the policies and procedures of the practice.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and respect in all interactions.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with GDPR and NHS information governance requirements.
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role and commensurate with the grade of the post.
