Reports ToLead Mammographer / Breast Imaging Manager / Superintendent Radiographer
Job PurposeTo provide a high-quality mammography service within the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and symptomatic breast services. The post holder will perform mammographic examinations safely, effectively, and compassionately while maintaining high professional and technical standards. Depending on experience and grade, the role may include advanced practice responsibilities, supervision, training, quality assurance, and participation in multidisciplinary working.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Duties
- Perform high-quality mammographic examinations in accordance with NHS Breast Screening Programme standards.
- Undertake screening and symptomatic mammography.
- Produce diagnostic-quality images while minimising radiation dose.
- Adapt positioning techniques to accommodate patients with varying physical abilities or clinical needs.
- Provide compassionate care and support to anxious or distressed patients.
- Ensure patient dignity, privacy, and informed consent are maintained at all times.
- Recognise abnormal findings and follow appropriate escalation procedures within local protocols.
Patient Care
- Communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds.
- Explain procedures clearly and answer patient questions.
- Support patients who may be experiencing pain, anxiety, or emotional distress.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with GDPR and NHS policies.
Quality & Safety
- Adhere to IR(ME)R and IRR regulations.
- Participate in quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) programmes.
- Report equipment faults promptly.
- Maintain accurate patient records using PACS, RIS, NBSS, and other clinical systems.
- Comply with infection prevention and control policies.
Professional Practice
- Maintain HCPC registration and CPD portfolio.
- Work within the Society and College of Radiographers Code of Professional Conduct.
- Participate in departmental audits and service improvement initiatives.
- Attend mandatory training and professional development activities.
Additional Responsibilities (Band 7)Band 7 Mammographers will also:
- Provide clinical leadership within the mammography team.
- Supervise and mentor Band 5/6 radiographers and assistant practitioners.
- Deliver training for students and newly qualified staff.
- Participate in recruitment and appraisal processes.
- Lead or contribute to audit, research, and quality improvement projects.
- Assist in protocol development and implementation.
- Support service planning and operational management.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
- Act as a role model for professional practice.
