Job summary
Job PurposeThe Consultant Dermatologist will provide clinical leadership and specialist dermatology services within a Consultant-led Community Dermatology Service. The post holder will assess, diagnose, treat and manage adult patients with a wide range of dermatological conditions, delivering high-quality care in accordance with NICE guidance, British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) standards, NHS constitutional requirements and locally commissioned service specifications.
The post holder will provide expert clinical oversight for multidisciplinary staff, support referral triage and Advice & Guidance services, undertake dermatological procedures, contribute to service development and ensure patients receive timely, safe and effective care closer to home. The service is required to be Consultant-led with a named Consultant Dermatologist responsible for clinical governance and service oversight.
Main duties of the job
Clinical ResponsibilitiesThe post holder will:
- Deliver consultant-led outpatient dermatology clinics for adults aged 18 years and over.
- Provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of dermatological conditions.
- Deliver one-stop assessment and treatment wherever clinically appropriate.
- Manage patients with conditions including:
- Eczema
- Psoriasis
- Dermatitis
- Acne
- Lichen planus
- Urticaria
- Fungal infections
- Hair, scalp and nail disorders
- Genital dermatology
- Premalignant skin lesions

- Perform dermatological procedures including:
- Skin biopsies
- Cryotherapy
- Minor skin surgery
- Lesion assessment and management
- Dermoscopy/dermatoscopy.
- Prescribe treatments in accordance with national guidance, local formularies and medicines-management policies.
- Retain responsibility for Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) prescribing in line with MHRA requirements.
- Ensure informed consent is obtained and documented for all procedures.
- Provide follow-up care based on clinical need and support Patient Initiated Follow-Up (PIFU) pathways where appropriate.

Referral Management and Clinical Triage
The Consultant Dermatologist will:
- Provide front-end clinical triage of referrals received via NHS e-Referral Service (eRS).
- Deliver specialist Advice and Guidance services to primary care clinicians.
- Support virtual consultations and teledermatology pathways.
- Identify and expedite urgent referrals requiring secondary care review.
- Ensure suspected cancer referrals are escalated immediately through appropriate Two Week Wait pathways.
- Support referral optimisation and reduction of unnecessary outpatient attendance.
Leadership and Clinical Governance
The post holder will:
- Act as a named Consultant Dermatologist for the service.
- Provide clinical leadership across community dermatology services.
- Maintain oversight of governance, patient safety and quality standards.
- Participate in incident investigation, learning reviews and risk management processes.

- Local ICB policies.
- Contribute to annual governance reporting and quality assurance activities.
