An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and motivatedLocumConsultant Cardiologist with a specialist interest in Heart Failure and Complex Devicesto join our high-performing team of 17 consultants at the University Hospitals Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB). We are seeking a clinician with expertise in advanced heart failure management, device therapy (including complex pacing and ICD/CRT implantation), and an enthusiasm for service development within this expanding subspecialty. Additional complementary interests--such as advanced echocardiography, cardiac CT/MRI, EP, or inherited cardiac conditions--are welcomed. This post is offered as a fixed-term appointment to provide maternity leave cover until June 2027, supporting the delivery and continuity of our heart failure and complex device services. The successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing development of high-quality clinical care within the department, working closely with the existing heart failure and device consultants to maintain and enhance service provision. The Derby & Burton Heart Centre is one of the UK's largest non-surgical cardiology units, serving a population of over one million across Derbyshire and East Staffordshire.

Main duties of the job

UHDB provides state-of-the-art facilities for the investigation and management of cardiovascular disease. Key features include:

  • Two modern interim cardiac catheter laboratories(Philips/Siemens) delivering PCI and pacing services.
  • Approximately1,300 PCI procedures annually, including24/7 PPCIwith around 400 primary PCI cases per year.
  • Full capability forcomplex coronary intervention: rotablation, IVUS, OCT, FFR, and a dedicated CTO service.
  • We are currently undertaking a significant expansion, which includes a purpose-built pacing laboratory and three state-of-the-art interventional labs due to open at the Royal Derby Hospital in July 2026."

Our clinical measurement and echocardiography department is fully BSE-accredited, offering comprehensive TTE, TOE, and DSE services. Cross-sectional imaging is delivered in partnership with Radiology, supported by modern CT and MRI scanners (including a new 16cm detector cardiac CT installed in near future). Additional facilities include:

  • Coronary Care Units
  • Ambulatory Heart Failure Unit
  • Day-case unit
  • Dedicated cardiology wards

We maintain strong MDT links with regional cardiothoracic centres at Glenfield Hospital (Leicester) and the Trent Cardiac Centre (Nottingham). UHDB is also a major teaching centre for the University of Nottingham and has an excellent track record in NIHR cardiovascular research recruitment.

Job description

The appointed consultant will join two existing heart failure and device specialists, working closely with the echocardiography and clinical measurement teams. Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering and expanding specialistheart failure and complex device services, including device implantation and followup.
  • Developing a robustgeneral cardiology practicealongside subspecialty commitments.
  • Contributing to the growth of advanced imaging services in line with NICE CG95 (if relevant to the candidates skillset).
  • Participating in a1:6 / 1:10 general cardiology oncall rota, covering CCU and cardiology wards across sites.
  • No general internal medicine commitment.
  • Supporting education, training, and research within the department.
