Job summary

The post is for 10 sessions Consultant Paediatrician in the Redbridge Targeted childrens Community Paediatrics service. The post holder will be a GMC registered clinician responsible for patients allocated to them and will assess, manage, plan, and deliver evidenced based care, including being professionally and legally accountable. Barking & Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge (BHR) experiences significant variation in life expectancy, higher levels of child poverty and deprivation with rising demand and complexity in SEND population. There has been year on year increased in the number of CYP on EHCP. Redbridge has seen an increase of EHCPs request by 64.5% since 2019 with challenges that impact timeliness of plans being issued. With significant system challenges impacting on health outcomes and attainment for CYP with SEND, the post holder will be a key catalyst in supporting and influencing the SEND agenda including the SEND Reform locally and across the Trust, working closely with system partners.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support with clinical and operational leadership to contribute to working with the local team and local authority to ensure high quality advice is contributed to EHC plans, and to provide medical leadership to the special school service. The post holder will support their peers and team leader whilst being an effective team member and working on their own initiative. They will supervise junior colleagues including provision of teaching and training. They will have a commitment to collaborative working and actively supporting and liaising with other health and social care professionals and agencies. The post holder will contribute as the Consultant Paediatrician in Redbridge who represents the medical team in meetings with the Redbridge local authority SEN service, working alongside therapy and operational leads. The successful applicant will also become part of a large (30+ community paediatricians), dynamic, community paediatric team, across the whole of Northeast London Foundation Trust. 1.2 Main responsibilities: • To be responsible for organising and prioritising own and others’ workload in the day-to-day allocation of work. • To deputise when required in the team manager’s absence and delegate appropriately to other medical staff. • To have organisational knowledge relating to Trust protocols and procedures and adhere to them. • To be responsible for providing accurate records of information required by the Trust for audit purposes. • To ensure effective risk management at team level by accident/incident reporting, assessing, and controlling risk and ensuring residual risks are added to the Trust’s risk register. • The post holder will support the development of the medical advice for EHC Plans , working alongside the multidisciplinary specialist team and local authority. They will contribute towards assessment and relevant investigations and supervising MDT colleagues. They will produce reports to contribute to statutory work, including EHC plans. • Provide and/or support the provision of evidence-based assessment and clinical management for service users. This will include providing highly specialist assessment and contributing to multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment of children and young people • Contribute to coordination and service development within the SENpathway • Managing waiting list within specialist care pathway and ensuring waiting lists are at clinically safe level. Prioritise resources in line with clinical needs • Be responsible for providing clinical leadership for special schools work, including providing medicals at one or more schools.

Clinical Skills:

  • To act as an autonomous, registered practitioner who is legally and professionally accountable for their own unsupervised actions guided by the professional code of conduct and Trust guidelines and protocols. • The post holder will have full registration with a licence to practice from the General Medical Council (GMC). • Further professional knowledge will have been gained through accredited courses, workshops, study, and in-house training programmes. • To be responsible, and accountable, for service delivery to clients/patients. • To be able to assess and develop care plans to meet the complex needs of patients with a variety of conditions, recognising own limitations and seeking advice when necessary. This will include continuously evaluating and acting on outcomes. • To be able to initiate referrals to other health professional specialist services and agencies. • To provide patients and relatives with information and education thus ensuring they have meaningful choices that promote dignity, independence, and quality of life. • To ensure practice is supported by research, evidence-based practice, literature, and peer review.
