Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to join the Biochemistry Department at James Cook University Hospital. You will be responsible for maintaining high professional standards while supporting the delivery of an effective Blood Science service. Working professionally accountable to the Blood Science Service Manager, you will manage your own professional development, participate in relevant training activities, and ensure your knowledge and skills remain up to date with the changing demands of the service. You will support continuous improvement by regularly reviewing your performance, developing personal development plans, and taking responsibility for your actions. You will also be expected to demonstrate effective time management, prioritisation, teamwork, and self-motivation while recognising your own strengths and areas for development to enhance your contribution to the department.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, you will be responsible for performing routine laboratory activities within the Biochemistry Department, rotating across relevant sections of the specialty and following approved methodologies, protocols, and procedures. You will manage your workload independently, contributing to the delivery of diagnostic services through a 24/7 shift system, including weekend working, extended hours, and out-of-hours cover where required. You will support the induction and competency development of Biomedical Scientists, Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Healthcare Science Support Workers, and other laboratory staff in line with departmental requirements. You will maintain effective working relationships with laboratory teams, Pathology services, and clinical colleagues, ensuring clear communication, participation in departmental discussions, and timely resolution of issues within your area of expertise. You will also follow Trust guidance relating to infection prevention, control, and health and safety standards while promoting a respectful and professional working environment.

Job description

To undertake complex analytical investigations and provide technically accurate laboratory results, applying specialist knowledge within Biochemistry to support clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment decisions.

To maintain the performance and reliability of laboratory equipment, completing advanced troubleshooting, verification checks, and documentation of technical interventions to support uninterrupted service provision.

To manage quality assurance activities within the department, including reviewing quality control performance, investigating discrepancies, and contributing to corrective and preventative actions in line with laboratory standards.

To evaluate clinical samples and laboratory requests, ensuring appropriate handling, prioritisation, and processing of specimens while identifying issues that may impact result accuracy or patient care.

To contribute to laboratory governance processes, including audits, risk assessments, incident reporting, validation activities, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance departmental effectiveness.

To support the implementation of service improvements and resource efficiency, including monitoring stock usage, assisting with new methodologies, and ensuring effective utilisation of laboratory equipment and consumables.
