Job summary

The KSS School of Public Health is seeking an exceptional public health specialist/consultant to lead the delivery of its specialty training programme. This is a particularly exciting time to join, as the programme is expanding through a number of new training posts, offering a unique opportunity to help shape the next generation of public health leaders while contributing to improved population health and reducing health inequalities.

Collectively, the KSS, Thames Valley, and Wessex Schools form the South East School of Public Health. While each school retains its distinct local identity, expertise, and strengths, they work in partnership to support the development of the public health workforce across the region. Through its three local units of application, the South East School of Public Health provides coordinated support for public health training and workforce development at all levels.

Main duties of the job

The Training Programme Director (TPD) will work closely with the Associate Head of School and TPD to lead the delivery and continuous development of the Public Health Specialty Training Programme across Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS). Working as part of a regional School, you will collaborate with colleagues to ensure trainees receive a high-quality, inclusive and well-supported training experience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing educational leadership for the Public Health Specialty Training Programme and contributing to its ongoing development and quality improvement.
  • Ensuring the programme meets the standards and requirements of the General Medical Council (GMC), Faculty of Public Health (FPH) and NHS England.
  • Supporting trainee progression through recruitment, placements, rotations, assessments, educational supervision, ARCP processes and trainee support.
  • Working closely with educational supervisors, local authorities, NHS organisations, UKHSA, higher education institutions and other key stakeholders to deliver an outstanding training programme.
  • Providing expert advice on specialty training matters, including out of programme (OOP), less than full-time training (LTFT), inter-deanery transfers (IDT), academic training and trainee career development.
  • Contributing to the strategic development of the KSS School of Public Health and supporting regional and national education and workforce priorities.

About us

NHS England has a wide range of statutory functions, responsibilities and regulatory powers. These are focused on supporting the wider NHS to deliver high quality care, as well as doing those things that are best done once for the whole NHS.

Our staff bring expertise across clinical, operational, commissioning, technology, data science, cyber security, software engineering, education, and commercial specialisms -- enabling us to design and deliver high-quality NHS services.

In March 2025, the Government announced that NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care will increasingly merge functions, ultimately leading to NHS England being fully integrated into the department.

If you currently work within the NHS and if successful at interview, we will initiate an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR).This retrieves key data from your current or previous NHS employer to support onboarding, including competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You may opt out at any stage of the process.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in our offices.

We cannot offer visa sponsorship for any vacancies.
