Job summary

A prosthetist designs, fabricates, and fits artificial limbs (prostheses) for patients who have experienced limb loss due to congenital conditions, amputation, or injury, helping them to regain mobility, function, and independence. Their role involves assessing patient needs, working with technicians to create the custom-fit devices, and providing follow-up care to ensure proper fit and function.

Main duties of the job

Promote high standards of care to service users across a broad range of amputation levels.

Act in a professional manner to colleagues, service users and their families at all times

Assess, measure, cast, fit, deliver, supply, review and adjust prosthesis as required across a range of amputation levels, both upper and lower extremity

Cast and rectify models in a timely fashion using both traditional methods and CADCAM where appropriate

Manage the patients case, including patient expectation, ensuring the individuals needs are respected and ensuring the patient is informed throughout the process with clear explanations of proposed interventions

Work within the parameters of accepted "best practice" at all times using evidence-based practices to ensure that all aspects of practice conform to clinical governance

Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure the most appropriate and effective treatment for service user

Support colleagues and the wider MDT through collaborative working

Support student and apprenticeship clinicians by sharing learning experiences and mentorship

Job description

To provide high quality prosthetic care, and develop a wide range of knowledge and experience in distinct areas of practice that can be specialist in nature.

Patient Assessment and Clinical Care

Conduct thorough assessments of patients' prosthetic needs through clinical examination, gait analysis, and evaluation of functional goals.

Measure, cast, fit, and deliver prostheses tailored to individual needs, ensuring optimal biomechanical alignment, comfort, and durability.

Monitor and maintain the fit and mechanical performance of prostheses over time, addressing issues proactively to prevent complications.

Utilise evidence-based clinical decision-making to support improved outcomes and meet contractual and professional standards.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

Work as a core member of the multidisciplinary team, contributing clinical expertise while respecting the contributions of other professionals.

Take the lead in prescribing appropriate prosthetic interventions and communicate clearly with colleagues, patients, families, and carers.

Provide clear, concise instructions to technical staff for the manufacture or modification of devices, ensuring safety, precision, and timeliness.

Participate in case discussions, joint clinics, and patient reviews with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other specialists.

3. Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance

Participate in clinical audit, outcomes tracking, incident reporting, and service development projects as part of the clinical governance framework.

Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive patient records, ensuring compliance with HCPC, GDPR, and Data Protection legislation.

Ensure all job sheets, stock records, and associated documentation are completed with clarity and accuracy to support invoicing and audit trails.

Contribute to service evaluation, quality improvement initiatives, and innovation in clinical and operational practice.
