Main duties of the job

As an Advanced OT Practitioner at Potters Bar Clinic, you are tasked with leading and developing Occupational Therapy services designed to empower patients towards greater independence and recovery. This involves working both with Children and Young People's Mental Health Services and Adult Services. The role demands managing the Occupational Therapy Service, integrating evidence-based and person-centred strategies to build confidence and essential life skills among service users. Responsibilities also include leading the delivery of therapy interventions, managing assessments and treatment plans, and providing leadership within the therapy team. Experience is essential: a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy, Royal College of Occupational Therapists membership, and HCPC registration are required, alongside 3 years' experience in the field including at least 1 year in a specialized area such as CAMHS services. In this rewarding leadership role, you will manage and develop the Occupational Therapy Service, using evidence-based and person-centred approaches to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions that help service users build confidence, develop essential life skills and achieve greater independence. Working closely with multidisciplinary colleagues, you will ensure high-quality therapeutic support that promotes recovery, rehabilitation and positive outcomes.

You will lead the delivery of individual and group interventions, oversee comprehensive assessments and treatment plans, and ensure that Occupational Therapy services are responsive to the evolving needs of service users. As a senior member of the therapy team, you will provide leadership, supervision and support to Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants and students, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous development.

Working under the strategic direction of the Therapy Lead, you will contribute to the ongoing development of therapy services, helping to shape innovative programmes that support living skills, education, leisure and rehabilitation. You will also play a key role in care coordination for young people within the service, maintaining strong relationships with service users, families, carers and external stakeholders throughout the recovery journey.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • The post holder will hold a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy together with full Royal College of Occupational Therapist membership and active HCPC registration.
  • The role holder will require at least 3 years’ experience including at least 1 years’ experience of working within the specialised area i.e. CAMHS services Mental Health/PD services
  • Possess confidence and competence in assessing patients with a variety of psychometrics and risk assessment tools.
  • Be able to work therapeutically, engaging patients in developing insight and coping skills to manage their complex needs, both clinical and sensory based needs.
  • Have good communication skills, both written and oral and is able to pitch complex information to different audiences.
  • Have a sound, up to date awareness of legislation and its implications for the profession and working with the mentally disordered client group.
  • Able to proactively resolve problems and challenges within the service in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Be able to supervise and where appropriate line manage staff in the service.
  • Be able to operate within professional boundaries and in line with the RCOT / HCPC Code of Conduct at all times.

Join the team at Potters Bar Clinic providing care for young people and adults with acute mental health needs and personality disorders in an established 24-hour care environment. The CYPMHS Tier 4 Low Secure services are for young people aged 13–18.

Potters Bar Clinic is located in a residential area, only one minute drive from the M25 and a short bus ride from Potters Bar Train Station, with a bus stop right outside, making it an easy commute for most.
