Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic dynamic individual to join our team of six consultants. This new consultant post has been created to support the delivery of specialist Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) surgery, emergency general surgery and with the possibility to support renal transplantation at Derriford Hospital. It is anticipated that this post will subsequently become substantive, with impending reductions in senior colleagues' working practices.

The HPB service is managed within the Surgical Division and the Service Line Director (Mr Chris Briggs) represent the Service Line at senior management level.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this post is to provide high-quality care in Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) surgery, emergency general surgery and elective general surgery at Derriford Hospital. The successful applicant will join a well-established and expanding HPB service line, contributing to the delivery of specialist surgical services for liver and pancreatic disease. For the appropriately skilled applicant there will also be the opportunity to join colleagues supporting the Southwest Transplant Unit in delivering renal transplantation. However, this is not an essential criteria for application to the post as we will consider highly skilled HPB only orientated applicants.

The post has been developed in response to increasing demand for tertiary and secondary care across the Southwest Peninsula and to maintain safe, sustainable service provision in anticipation of changes to senior consultant working arrangements. The appointee will play an active role in the multidisciplinary management of complex HPB conditions, participate in the general surgery emergency rota, and be supported in the development of skills relevant to the renal transplant programme as appropriate.

The HPB robotic surgery Programme at UHP started earlier in 2025, and we will be looking to enhance this in the coming months - developing the range and scope of procedures offered. This post-holder would be expected to join our current Robotic surgeons (Prof Aroori and Mr Kanwar) in their journey.
