Job summary
The Tutbury Practice is looking for a dedicated and compassionate General Practice Nurse to join our friendly, patient-focused team who can provide a full range of nursing services, for 20 hours per week fixed term for 12 months only. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced General Practice Nurse looking to develop their skills within our surgery. Must have General Practice Nurse experience. Must be trained in chronic disease annual reviews(Asthma/COPD/Diabetes/Hypertension).
The role will involve all aspects of practice nursing, including cervical screening, baby immunisations, recording immunisations given abroad, family planning, and chronic disease management. You will work closely with our GPS and the rest of our well-established nursing team to deliver high-quality patient care.

Job description
Patient Care:
Assist and support the nursing team with clinical tasks like wound care, cytology, childhood immunisations, recording immunisations given abroad, medicals, and chaperoning. Conduct pathology requests, and manage LTCs including Diabetes, Asthma, COPD, and the other Quality and Outcome Framework Reviews.
Clinical & Admin Duties:
Follow protocols, maintain equipment and clinical rooms, ensure stock rotation, and manage vaccine orders. Support flu home visits, keep mandatory check records, input and management of patient vaccination records, and assist with administrative processes.

Safeguard patient data and uphold practice policies on sensitive information.
Health & Safety:
Implement infection control protocols, manage PPE and hand hygiene, handle specimens, and oversee sterile environments. Train on safety measures, monitor equipment, and address hazards.

Clinical Responsibilities
Administer injections under an individualised prescription or PGD
Assist GPs with minor surgery and coil clinics as and when required
Maintain cold chain procedures to ensure safe storage, rotation, and disposal of vaccines and drugs
Infection Prevention and Control
Apply infection control measures within the practice in line with local and national guidelines, including:
Universal hygiene precautions
Collection and handling of laboratory specimens
Segregation and disposal of waste materials
Decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment
Reporting and treatment of sharps injuries
Managing blood and body fluid spillages
Ensuring safe disposal of clinical waste and PPE
Support patients and colleagues in adopting effective infection control measures
Lead or participate in infection prevention and control audits to maintain high standards
Emergency Preparedness
Be proficient in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques to respond to emergencies effectively
Support the maintenance of emergency equipment (e.g., trolley and drugs) and attend updates as required
General Duties
Maintain and ensure cleanliness of equipment used by nurses and GPs
Stock and rotate items in GP and nurse rooms as needed
Chaperone and assist patients during examinations conducted by other clinicians
Ensure the cleanliness and tidiness of treatment rooms
Administrative Tasks
Order and manage stock such as:
Health Promotion Literature
The input of information and management of patient vaccination records
Participate in administrative systems and ensure accurate documentation of patient medical records following legal and ethical standards
Advise management on potential problems or errors within assigned tasks
Attend and contribute to Practice meetings as needed
Education and Research
Participate in research projects within the practice as required
Engage in the education and training of students from all disciplines
Assist in the induction of practice staff, with particular emphasis on nursing team members
Liaison and Professional Development
Maintain effective communication with other agencies and staff involved in patient care, ensuring confidentiality is respected
Participate in continued education through attendance at courses and study days to support professional development
About us
The Tutbury Practice is a friendly semi-rural GP surgery located in the village of Tutbury, providing high-quality primary care to a patient population of approximately 8,500. We proudly serve patients from Tutbury and the surrounding areas, including Rolleston, Hatton, and Stretton.
Our clinical team is made up of two GP partners and five salaried GPs, supported by a skilled multidisciplinary team that includes a clinical pharmacist, Pharmacy Technician, nurse practitioner, and first contact physiotherapist. We are also fortunate to have a friendly, experienced nursing team, alongside a dedicated administration and reception team who play a vital role in supporting patient care.
The practice operates a total digital triage system using accuRx, enabling efficient access to care and streamlined patient communication. We use EMIS Web and Docman to support safe, effective clinical practice and document management.
The Tutbury Practice is a training practice for GP registrars and medical students and is an active research practice, contributing to research that helps improve patient care locally and nationally. We hold regular clinical and practice meetings to support teamwork, learning, and service development, and we consistently achieve high QOF outcomes.
