Job summary

We are looking for a caring, motivated and enthusiastic Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly nursing team at Central Surgery.

This is a varied and rewarding role supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care within a busy GP practice.

Main duties of the job

Working as part of our multidisciplinary team, you will undertake a range of clinical duties including venepuncture, blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, health checks, wound care support and long-term condition reviews, while ensuring patients receive compassionate and professional care.

The role also includes carrying out clinical room checks, maintaining stock levels within clinical areas, ordering clinical supplies, testing and processing patient samples in accordance with practice protocols, and ensuring equipment and consumables are available, in date and ready for use.

Job description

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant in delivering health services. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Carry out clinical checks for patients with long term conditions. These include (but are not limited to):

i. Blood tests (venepuncture)

ii. BMI

iii. Blood pressure and pulse

iv. ECG

v. Diabetic foot checks

vi. Information gathering (e.g. questions about patient understanding of medications)

  • Provide wound care support to the nursing team, including dressings, suture removal, performing dopplers
  • Testing urine samples and other specimens and acting on the results following practice protocol. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
  • Act as a chaperone as required
  • Provide support during minor operations as required
  • Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC Policy
  • Carrying out checks on clinical rooms and equipment to ensure stocks are replenished, in date and any infection control risks are addressed
  • Be aware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children
  • Recognise the boundaries of their practice and know when and to whom patients should be referred
  • Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes
  • Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times
  • Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed
