Job summary

Due to the retirement of our long-serving Practice Manager, The Portchester Practice is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and experienced leader to join our team.

This is an excellent opportunity to lead a well-established, forward-thinking GP training practice providing high-quality care to approximately 11,300 patients in Portchester, Hampshire.

We are looking for an exceptional individual with strong leadership, organisational and business management skills who can continue to develop and drive the practice forward.

Previous experience as a Practice Manager or Deputy Practice Manager within General Practice is highly desirable. However, we would also welcome applications from candidates with significant senior management experience gained within a comparable healthcare or service environment who can demonstrate the skills and experience required to successfully lead a busy organisation.

The successful candidate will work closely with the GP Partners and the wider practice team, providing visible and effective leadership across all aspects of practice management.

Recruitment Process

Our recruitment process will consist of two stages.

Stage One Initial Interviews Initial interviews will take place during the week commencing 7 September 2026.

Stage Two Final Interviews Candidates shortlisted following the initial interviews will be invited to attend a final interview on Monday 14 September 2026 with the GP Partners.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the GP Partners, the Practice Manager will have overall responsibility for the operational, financial and strategic management of the practice.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide strategic leadership and effective operational management of the practice.
  • Lead, motivate and develop a multidisciplinary team.
  • Oversee the day-to-day running of the practice, ensuring services are delivered efficiently and effectively.
  • Manage practice finances, including budgeting, payroll, financial planning and business planning.
  • Ensure compliance with NHS contractual requirements, CQC regulations, employment legislation and information governance standards.
  • Lead workforce planning, recruitment, staff development and performance management.
  • Develop and implement service improvements and support innovation across the practice.
  • Work collaboratively with the GP Partners and clinical leads to deliver the practice's strategic objectives.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with the Primary Care Network, NHS organisations, commissioners and other external stakeholders.
  • Ensure appropriate governance, risk management and quality improvement arrangements are maintained.
  • Support the Partners in delivering the long-term strategic vision and continued development of the practice.

This is a senior leadership role requiring a proactive, organised and commercially aware individual who is able to balance the operational demands of a busy GP practice with longer-term strategic planning.

Job Summary The Practice Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, management and operational performance of The Portchester Practice. Working closely with the GP Partners, the Practice Manager will ensure the practice delivers safe, effective, high-quality, patient-centred services whilst maintaining financial sustainability, regulatory compliance and an engaged workforce. The Practice Manager will provide strategic leadership, manage organisational change, oversee contractual and financial performance and ensure the practice continues to develop and innovate in response to the changing NHS landscape.Leadership and Strategy

Provide professional leadership to the non-clinical workforce.

Support the Partners in developing and delivering the practice strategy.

Lead organisational change and service development.

Develop annual business plans and operational objectives.

Ensure the practice remains financially sustainable whilst maintaining excellent patient care.

Monitor NHS policy, contractual developments and funding opportunities.

Operational Management Overall responsibility for reception, administration, secretarial services, patient services, IT, estates and facilities.

Ensure services operate efficiently and continuously.

Monitor performance against operational indicators and implement improvements.

Workforce Leadership Lead recruitment, induction, appraisal, training, workforce planning, absence and performance management.

Support the management of nursing staff alongside the Lead Nurse.

Ensure HR compliance with employment legislation and NHS guidance.

Financial Management Lead budgeting, financial monitoring, payroll oversight, NHS pensions, contract monitoring, income maximisation and business planning.

Work with accountants and Partners to maintain financial sustainability.

Contract Management Ensure delivery of GMS, Enhanced Services, QOF, PCN and commissioned services.

Maintain evidence of contractual compliance.

Quality and Governance Lead complaints, risk management, policies, business continuity, incident reporting and governance.

Support continuous quality improvement.

CQC Compliance Lead CQC readiness and maintain evidence across all quality domains.

Digital and Information Governance Provide strategic oversight of EMIS Web, Docman, cyber security, GDPR, DSPT and digital services.

Undertake SIRO responsibilities and oversee information governance.

Estates and Health & Safety Manage premises, maintenance, contracts, security, health and safety, fire safety and statutory compliance.

Patient Services Lead patient engagement, complaints, communications, website management and service improvement.

Partnership Working Represent the practice with the ICB, PCN, NHS England, LMC and external stakeholders.

Regulatory Responsibilities Act as or oversee SIRO, Local Smartcard Administrator and Data Protection Lead where appropriate.

General Responsibilities Maintain confidentiality.

Promote equality, diversity and inclusion.

Support safeguarding.

Maintain mandatory training and CPD.
