Main duties of the job

The Superintendent Pharmacist is responsible for ensuring the pharmacy operates safely, legally, and to a high professional standard. This includes overseeing patient safety, maintaining compliance with pharmacy regulations, developing and reviewing procedures, supporting and training staff, managing risks, ensuring medicines are handled appropriately, and promoting the delivery of effective, high-quality patient care.

The role also involves providing professional leadership and ensuring the pharmacy continually improves its services and standards.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced, motivated and patient-focused Superintendent Pharmacist to lead the safe, effective and compliant operation of our well-established community pharmacy in Broughton, Flintshire, just seven miles from Chester.

Dispensing approximately 16,000 prescription items each month, our pharmacy delivers a comprehensive range of NHS Wales services, including the Wales Common Ailments Service (covering uncomplicated urinary tract infections and sore throats) and seasonal influenza vaccinations.

The appointment will be undertaken in accordance with the Pharmacy (Responsible Pharmacists, Superintendent Pharmacists etc.) Order 2022. As Superintendent Pharmacist, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and effective operation of the pharmacy business and maintaining robust systems of clinical governance, regulatory compliance and professional standards.

Supported by an experienced team of Accredited Checking Technicians, Pharmacy Technicians, dispensary staff and the Pharmacy Manager, you will be able to focus on service development and the continuous delivery of high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Act as the Superintendent Pharmacist in accordance with all applicable legislation, professional standards and regulatory requirements.

Ensure the pharmacy operates safely, effectively and in full compliance with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) standards, NHS Wales contractual requirements and company policies.

Provide professional leadership, guidance and support to the pharmacy team.

Develop, implement and regularly review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and governance processes.

Lead the development and expansion of enhanced clinical services to meet the needs of the local community.

Work collaboratively with local GP practices, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders to improve patient outcomes.

Maintain and, where appropriate, enhance the pharmacy's profitability through effective operational management, prudent stock control and efficient use of resources, whilst ensuring that patient safety and professional standards remain paramount.

Essential Requirements

Current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Right to work in the United Kingdom.

Satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Excellent communication, leadership and organisational skills.

Thorough understanding of community pharmacy governance, legislation and best practice.

Ability to lead and motivate an established multidisciplinary team within a busy community pharmacy.

Desirable

Independent Prescriber (IP) qualification.

Previous experience in a senior leadership, pharmacy management or Superintendent Pharmacist role.

The company was incorporated in 1992, having previously operated as a dispensary within a GP surgery. Located in the village of Broughton, the pharmacy has built a strong reputation within the local community and is highly valued by its patients. The pharmacy dispenses approximately 16,000 prescription items each month and is supported by a dedicated team of experienced staff, many of whom have been with the organisation for a number of years.

The current Superintendent Pharmacist took over the role last year from the previous postholder, who had been with the organisation since before incorporation in 1992. The current Superintendent Pharmacist has over 10 years experience within this pharmacy, having previously carried locum work. He is supported by well-trained Accredited Checking Technicians (ACTs), pharmacy technicians, and dispensary staff.

The pharmacy is open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 6:00pm, providing consistent and accessible services to the local community.
