Job summary

We are seeking a compassionate, motivated and professional Registered Nurse to join our Surgical Unit. This role offers an exciting opportunity to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care to patients undergoing elective surgical procedures, supporting them throughout their journey from admission to discharge.

As a key member of the multidisciplinary team, you will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating individualised care, ensuring patient safety, dignity and comfort at all times. You will provide skilled clinical care, monitor patients before and after surgery, administer treatments and medications, and contribute to positive patient outcomes through evidence-based practice.

The successful candidate will be committed to maintaining the highest standards of nursing practice in accordance with the NMC Code and will actively contribute to quality improvement, patient safety initiatives and professional development. Strong communication skills, a caring and compassionate approach, and the ability to work effectively within a team are essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will deliver high-quality nursing care to patients within the Surgical Unit, supporting patients throughout their surgical pathway from admission to discharge. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care, monitoring patients before and after surgery, administering medications and treatments, maintaining accurate clinical records, and providing patient education and support. The role also includes promoting patient safety, adhering to infection prevention and control standards, identifying and escalating clinical concerns, and contributing to quality improvement activities. Working collaboratively with consultants, anaesthetists and the wider multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will help ensure excellent patient outcomes while maintaining professional standards in line with NMC requirements.

Job Title: Registered Nurses

Department: Surgical Unit

Hours: We have two 36-hour contracts and one 30-hour contract available.

Salary: £41,363 pro rata.

Responsible to: Surgical Unit Manager.

The Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care across all areas of the Surgical Unit. The role involves assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for patients undergoing surgical procedures, ensuring safety, dignity and comfort throughout their care pathway.

The nurse will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to maintain the highest clinical standards and support excellent patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical care

  • Deliver safe and effective nursing care in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct.
  • Assess patient needs and provide individualised care
  • Monitor patient condition pre-operative and post-operative, recognising and responding to complications.
  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with hospital policies and NMC guidelines.
  • Provide wound care, pain management and post-surgical monitoring.
  • Maintain accurate patient documentation and electronic health records.

Patient safety and quality

  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards.
  • Identify risks and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Participate in clinical audits, governance and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure safe handling of medicines and medical equipment.

Communication and patient support

  • Provide clear information and reassurance to patients and families.
  • Support patients throughout the surgical journey including admission, recovery and discharge.
  • Liaise with consultants, anaesthetists and the wider multidisciplinary team.

Professional practice

  • Maintain active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
  • Participate in continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Contribute to mentoring junior staff, student nurses or healthcare assistants.
  • Uphold professional standards and hospital policies.

Teamwork

  • Work effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Support colleagues to maintain safe staffing levels and patient care standards.
  • Participate in handovers, clinical meetings and training sessions.
