Job summary

Join our dynamic Obstetrics & Gynaecology team and play a key role in transforming maternity care.

We are excited to offer a new Tier 2 Registrar post, developed to support the implementation of the Birmingham Symptom-specific Obstetric Triage System (BSOTS) and enhance the delivery of safe, timely and high-quality care within our maternity triage service.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced registrar looking to develop advanced acute obstetric skills, leadership experience and service improvement expertise within a supportive, forward-thinking department committed to innovation, education and outstanding patient care.

This role offers a broad range of clinical experience across the full spectrum of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The successful applicant will work on the labour ward, support maternity assessment services, undertake antenatal clinics, and participate in ward rounds across antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology wards, caring for women with both routine and complex conditions.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will provide senior clinical care across the full range of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, working as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside consultants, midwives and allied healthcare professionals. On the labour ward, duties include the assessment and management of women in labour and those with pregnancy complications, interpretation of CTGs, decision-making in obstetric emergencies, and performing operative vaginal deliveries and caesarean sections appropriate to competence.

Job description

The post holder will participate in a 1:8 Tier 2 resident on-call rota. During overnight shifts (22:00to08:30), you will be the most senior resident doctor within the department, providing leadership and clinical decision-making for the on-call team. Consultant obstetricians and gynaecologists provide non-resident on-call cover overnight and are available to attend the hospital whenever required, ensuring senior support is readily accessible while allowing you to develop confidence and autonomy in managing acute presentations.

Your clinical practice will be varied and rewarding. On the labour ward you will assess and manage women in labour, interpret fetal surveillance including CTGs, undertake operative vaginal deliveries and caesarean sections appropriate to your level of competence, and lead the initial management of obstetric emergencies. You will work closely with consultants, anaesthetists, neonatologists, midwives and theatre teams to deliver safe multidisciplinary care.

The role also includes regular antenatal clinics, ward rounds across antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology wards, management of women attending the Pregnancy Assessment Area using the Birmingham Symptom-specific Obstetric Triage System (BSOTS), and assessment of acute gynaecology presentations. You will participate in elective and emergency gynaecology operating lists, outpatient clinics and robotic surgery sessions at Darlington Memorial Hospital, enabling you to maintain and develop both surgical and outpatient skills.

Education and professional development are integral to the role. A comprehensive Trust and departmental induction is provided, with an allocated Educational Supervisor to support your training and career progression. The department has a strong educational ethos with weekly CTG teaching, monthly departmental teaching sessions, simulation training, audit, governance and quality improvement activities, alongside opportunities to teach junior colleagues and medical students.

We actively encourage the development of specialist interests and will support these alongside service and training requirements wherever possible. Opportunities are available to gain experience in high-risk obstetrics, maternal medicine, fetal medicine, robotic surgery, urogynaecology, fertility, early pregnancy and gynaecological oncology.

The post is designed to provide an excellent balance of clinical responsibility, autonomy and consultant support within a friendly, collaborative department committed to delivering outstanding patient care while helping doctors achieve their professional and career goals.
