Job summary

We're looking for an enthusiastic and organised Ophthalmic Research Coordinator to join our dedicated Ophthalmology research team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering innovative commercial and non-commercial clinical trials that help shape the future of eye care.

In this varied role, you'll combine specialist ophthalmic imaging with clinical research coordination, working closely with patients, clinicians, sponsors, reading centres and multidisciplinary teams to ensure studies are delivered safely, ethically, and to the highest quality standards.

From supporting participant recruitment and follow up to performing advanced imaging and coordinating study activities, you'll make a real difference to both the patient experience and the development of new treatments.

Main duties of the job

The Ophthalmic Research Coordinator will assist with coordinating the day to day delivery of a portfolio of ophthalmology research studies, ensuring they are conducted in accordance with study protocols, GCP, regulatory requirements, and local policies.

They will perform and support specialised ophthalmic imaging procedures such as OCT, fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, and other protocol specific imaging, ensuring high quality image capture and accurate documentation to meet sponsor and central reading centre requirements.

The post holder will act as a key point of contact for study sponsors, central reading centres, and other external stakeholders, coordinating communications, facilitating the transfer of study data and images, resolving queries, and helping to ensure studies are delivered efficiently and on schedule.

Job description

Research Study Coordination:

  • Assist with the coordination of Ophthalmology studies in line with study protocols
  • Assist in study set-up activities, including feasibility questionnaires and site initiation
  • Ensure all study procedures and data collection is completed accurately and within required timeframes
  • Provide complex technical information to colleagues as part of their R&D duties.

Patient Recruitment & Care

  • Identify, screen, and assist with the recruitment of eligible patients in clinical studies
  • Support the informed consent process (as delegated and trained)
  • Ensure patient, safety, wellbeing, dignity and confidentiality at all times
  • Use tact & persuasive skills and occasionally deal with anxious patients

Ophthalmic Imaging & Clinical Procedures

  • Plan and independently perform Ophthalmic Imaging procedures in line with study protocols, including:
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
  • Fundus photography
  • Fluorescein Angiography
  • Ensuring imaging is of high quality and meets sponsor and reading centre specifications
  • Accurately label, store, and upload images to designates systems within required timelines
  • Support additional clinical assessments (e.g. visual acuity, mydriasis and intraocular pressure) as appropriate
  • Independently undertake routine Ophthalmic imaging clinics to support accreditation and certifications as required
  • Take responsibility for using and care of expensive equipment for which they are responsible during use
  • Work autonomously and unsupervised in clinical and research settings, manager available for reference if required.
  • Requires high levels of dexterity manipulating equipment.

Data Collection & Management

  • Collect, record, and maintain accurate study data in case report (CRFs) and electronic data capture systems.
  • Plan and organise all areas of data collection in line with agreed protocols.
  • The postholder will undertake detailed analysis of test results and advise stakeholders accordingly.
  • Ensure all study procedures and data collection is completed accurately and within required timeframes, it isnt at all clear to what extent they are responsible for
  • Maintain investigator site files and study documentation in line with regulatory standards

Communication

  • Act as a primary liaison between the research team and external stakeholders, including:
  • Trial sponsors
  • Central reading centres
  • Coordinate the transfer of imaging and study data to external parties
  • Respond to data queries and imaging feedback in a timely manner
  • Communicate complex clinical information to patients in the course of providing treatment

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain study trackers, logs, and screening/recruitment databases
  • Assist with monitoring and management of research imaging estate
  • Assist with reporting recruitment figures and study progress
  • May demonstrate formal training to others own duties relating to trial certification.

Professional Development

  • Maintain up to date GCP certification and relevant training
  • Develop knowledge of Ophthalmology, imaging techniques and clinical research practices

We are a busy team made up of Ophthalmologists, Research Doctors, Optometrists, Clinical Trial Coordinators, Ophthalmic Imagers and Clinical Trials Assistants, all working collaboratively to deliver high quality research.

Our team operates mainly at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital however cross site working will be required.
