Main duties of the job

In this role, you will lead the development and implementation of behaviour support practices, ensuring that these are person-centred, trauma-informed, and least restrictive. Your focus will be on providing expert consultation and support to teams, aiding in behaviour support planning and risk formulation to ensure effective care. With a keen eye on quality improvement, you will monitor and analyse data to identify trends and inform service enhancement. Key elements involve collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and providing coaches, mentors, and training to build a culture of confident and capable professionals in behaviour support. Additionally, you are expected to support staff training, reflective practice, and competency development to maintain a high standard of care quality across the region. An essential part of the job is promoting positive behaviour support and reducing restrictive practices while actively engaging in governance and quality assurance activities.

In this influential role, you will provide expert leadership, guidance and oversight of behaviour support practice, ensuring services deliver safe, effective and evidence-based care that promotes independence, dignity and wellbeing. Working closely with operational and clinical teams, you will help embed best practice approaches that support service users to achieve meaningful outcomes while reducing reliance on restrictive interventions.

You will oversee the development and implementation of high-quality behaviour support plans, ensuring they are personalised, evidence-informed and fully aligned with individual needs, risk assessments and care plans. Using clinical insight, data and quality intelligence, you will identify trends, monitor outcomes and support services to implement targeted improvement initiatives that enhance care quality and service user experience.

As a champion of least restrictive practice, you will provide expert advice and support to services, helping them reduce restrictive interventions in line with organisational policies, statutory requirements and national best practice. Through coaching, mentoring, training and role modelling, you will build capability within teams, enabling colleagues to develop confidence and expertise in positive behaviour support approaches.

This is a remote role, with expectation to visit sites across South/ South West and Wales.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the development, implementation and review of behaviour support approaches across the region, ensuring practice is person-centred, trauma-informed and least restrictive.
  • Provide expert consultation, coaching and support to operational, clinical and site-based teams in relation to behaviour support planning, risk formulation and proactive intervention strategies.
  • Support services to analyse incidents, identify themes and develop action plans that reduce distress, incidents and restrictive interventions.
  • Promote consistent standards of Positive Behaviour Support, active support and therapeutic engagement across regional services.
  • Contribute to governance, quality assurance and service improvement activity through audits, reviews, reporting and participation in relevant regional meetings.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, families, carers and external professionals to support effective care planning and positive outcomes.
  • Support training, reflective practice and competency development for staff involved in delivering behaviour support.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Relevant professional qualification or equivalent experience in health, social care, psychology, nursing, therapy, education or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support, trauma-informed practice, active support, person-centred planning and least restrictive practice.
  • Ability to formulate behaviour support needs using assessment, observation, incident data and multidisciplinary information.
  • Excellent communication, coaching, facilitation and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to analyse data, identify trends and translate findings into practical improvement actions.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, mental capacity, risk management, governance and regulatory expectations relevant to health and social care services.

Experience

  • Experience of developing, implementing and reviewing behaviour support plans for people with complex needs.
  • Experience of working within multidisciplinary teams in health, social care, mental health, learning disability, autism or specialist services.
  • Experience of supporting services to reduce restrictive practice and improve service user outcomes.
  • Experience of coaching, mentoring or training staff to improve practice and confidence in behaviour support.
  • Experience of using incident data, audit findings or quality information to inform improvement plans.
  • Experience of working across multiple services or sites is desirable.
