Job summary

We are seeking a dedicated, organised, and capable Practice Manager to join New North Health Centre and lead the operational management of our well-established GP practice. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated individual to play a key leadership role in ensuring the efficient day-to-day running of the practice while supporting the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care to our local community.

New North Health Centre has a patient population of approx. 1650. It is based in Islington with easy access to Essex Road mainline train station.

We are seeking a part-time Practice Manager to work 15 hours per week, over 2 days although this is flexible and can be negotiated.

Main duties of the job

The Practice Manager will provide strategic and operational leadership to ensure the practice operates efficiently, effectively, and in full compliance with regulatory requirements. Working closely with the Partner and the wider practice team, they will oversee the day-to-day management of clinical and business operations, including finance, premises, governance, and service delivery, to support the provision of high-quality patient care.

The successful candidate will lead workforce management, organisational development, regulatory compliance, and continuous service improvement. They will develop and maintain effective systems and processes, support the achievement of contractual and performance targets, and ensure the practice remains responsive to the evolving needs of patients and the wider NHS.

This role requires excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills, along with the ability to build strong working relationships within the practice and with external stakeholders, including the Integrated Care Board (ICB), Primary Care Network (PCN), NHS organisations, and partner agencies. The Practice Manager will play a pivotal role in driving the ongoing development, resilience, and long-term sustainability of the practice.

Job description

Long-term Planning and Operational Management

  • Lead the strategic development and transformation of the practice to ensure long-term sustainability, resilience, and operational efficiency.
  • Provide strategic oversight and ownership of the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) and enhanced services.
  • Maintain responsibility for all practice policies, including the Business Continuity Plan, ensuring they remain current and compliant.

Financial Management and Business Development

  • Ensure sound financial governance and adherence to good financial management practices.
  • Review contracts, provide advice, and make recommendations to support business development.
  • Ensure invoices are processed and submitted for payment promptly.
  • Prepare and submit payroll to the payroll provider, ensuring all PAYE and pension submissions are completed accurately and on time.

People Management, Workforce Planning and Culture

  • Lead workforce planning to ensure sustainable staffing, effective recruitment, retention, and succession planning.
  • Develop and implement strategies to maximise workforce effectiveness and operational efficiency.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and annual appraisals for all practice staff.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive workplace culture where colleagues, patients, and visitors are treated with dignity and respect at all times.

Governance and Compliance

  • Lead on information governance and data protection across the practice.
  • Ensure continued compliance with Care Quality Commission (CQC) requirements and maintain a rating of Good or above.
  • Ensure confidentiality is maintained by all team members and within all areas of practice activity.
  • Implement, monitor, and evaluate quality improvement initiatives.
  • Oversee the management of the practice's IT systems, including compliance with and submission of the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT).

Partnership Development and Stakeholder Management

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with local healthcare providers and partner organisations to improve patient care.
  • Support engagement with commissioners, the local authority, and other external stakeholders.
  • Represent the practice at relevant meetings, networks, and forums.
  • Promote patient engagement and support the Patient Participation Group (PPG).
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and partner organisations for the benefit of patients and the practice.

Process Improvement and Problem Solving

  • Ensure effective clinical operating models are implemented and refined to meet patient needs and service demand.
  • Establish and maintain robust systems for the management of practice assets and facilities.
  • Oversee the management of all complaints, ensuring timely investigation and resolution.
  • Lead the review of complaints, significant events, and near misses, ensuring lessons learned are shared and embedded across the practice.

Communication and Collaborative Working

  • Promote effective communication, knowledge sharing, and collaboration across the practice.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with external stakeholders, including the Primary Care Network (PCN), Integrated Care Board (ICB), and other health and social care providers.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with staff, GPs, allied health professionals, patients, carers, and representatives.
  • Support the practice in responding to organisational transformation and changes in primary care service delivery.
