This role plays a vital part in delivering a specialist, enhanced Health Visiting service to communities experiencing homelessness and social exclusion, including asylum seekers, refugees, families in emergency accommodation, and those from marginalised or nomadic backgrounds such as Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Engagement Support Officer to join the 0-19 Inclusion Health Team. This role is dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of the most vulnerable children, young people, and families across Surrey. As a key member of the team, you will support the delivery of targeted health interventions through assertive outreach and meaningful community engagement.

Working in partnership with statutory services, voluntary organisations, and local community groups, you will help reduce barriers to accessing healthcare, address health inequalities, and strengthen connections between underserved populations and essential services.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with clinical colleagues, vaccine equity coordinators, immunisation providers, and wider partners to promote public health initiatives, including increasing uptake of routine immunisations among vaccine-hesitant and underserved communities. Through innovative and culturally sensitive approaches, you will contribute to improving health outcomes and empowering individuals and families to engage with services confidently.

You will play an active role in system-wide collaboration across the Integrated Care System (ICS), fostering partnerships with services such as mental health, sexual health, and other outreach teams to deliver a joined-up approach to care.

This position also involves developing creative engagement strategies, producing accessible resources, and using digital, media, and visual tools to connect effectively with diverse communities.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with excellent communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and a passion for tackling health inequalities. Your creativity, adaptability, and commitment to inclusive practice will be key to driving positive change and supporting the Inclusion Health Team in delivering impactful, community-focused care.

This role is part time and on a fixed term contract for 12 months.

Main Responsibilities

  • Support the Inclusion Health Team to deliver outreach and engagement with vulnerable children, young people and families across Surrey.
  • Build strong relationships with statutory, community and voluntary partners to improve access to health and wellbeing services.
  • Engage with marginalised communities (including homeless families, asylum seekers, refugees and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller groups) through regular visits in a variety of settings.
  • Promote health education and deliver targeted public health initiatives, including supporting uptake of childhood immunisations and vaccinations.
  • Identify unmet health needs and support families to access appropriate services, including GP registration, appointments and referrals.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical teams and partners to reduce health inequalities and improve outcomes.
  • Develop and deliver creative engagement strategies using accessible formats, including digital, visual and multilingual resources.
  • Attend partnership meetings and contribute to multi-agency working, including vaccine equity and homelessness forums.
  • Maintain accurate records, support audits, and use data to evidence impact of engagement activities.
  • Provide day-to-day support to junior/admin staff and contribute to service development.
  • Ensure safeguarding, confidentiality and culturally sensitive practice at all times.
  • Be flexible to support service delivery, including occasional evening or community-based sessions.

Ideal CandidateEssential

  • Degree level qualification or equivalent experience
  • Strong IT skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise workload and meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience handling sensitive and confidential information
  • Understanding of health inequalities and barriers for vulnerable groups
  • Awareness of issues affecting homeless and marginalised families
  • Basic project coordination skills
  • Culturally sensitive and inclusive approach

Desirable

  • Experience in public, health or voluntary sector roles
  • Community engagement or outreach experience
  • Knowledge of public health or vaccination programmes
  • Project management experience
