Job summary

To provide a high-quality, safe and effective clinical support service within the General Practice. The post holder will undertake venepuncture procedures, blood pressure monitoring, ECG recordings, height and weight measurements, and specimen management activities, ensuring accurate recording of clinical information and delivery of excellent patient care.

The post holder will support the Practice's Infection Prevention and Control requirements through the safe handling of specimens, management of clinical waste and sharps, maintenance of clinical equipment and environments, and preparation of clinical rooms for patient appointments.

Interviews will be held on Thursday 3 September 2026.

Ensure accurate labelling, handling, and processing of blood samples.

Provide a professional, caring, and reassuring service to patients.

Maintain accurate patient records using the practice clinical system.

Follow infection control, health and safety, and confidentiality procedures.

Work as part of a multidisciplinary primary care team to support high-quality patient care.

Job description

Phlebotomist 12 - 16 hours per week to be worked Wednesday to Friday, including extended access clinic Thursday evening. Successful candidate also to participate in extended access Saturday clinics 5 - 6 times per year.

Clinical Duties

Venepuncture

Perform venepuncture procedures safely and effectively in accordance with practice policies, professional standards and current clinical guidelines.

Correctly identify patients and confirm requested investigations prior to specimen collection.

Label specimens accurately and ensure they are processed and dispatched appropriately.

Recognise and appropriately respond to adverse reactions during or following venepuncture, including patient anxiety, dizziness or fainting.

Maintain patient dignity, privacy and comfort at all times.

Blood Pressure Monitoring

Undertake blood pressure measurements using approved equipment.

Accurately record readings within the patient's electronic medical record.

Identify and report abnormal readings to the appropriate clinician in accordance with practice protocols.

Electrocardiograms (ECGs)

Perform resting 12-lead ECGs in accordance with recognised procedures and training.

Ensure patients are appropriately prepared and informed before the procedure.

Accurately record and upload results to the clinical system.

Escalate urgent or unexpected findings in line with practice procedures.

Patient Assessment and Monitoring

Measure and record patient height and weight where appropriate.

Enter all clinical observations accurately and contemporaneously into the patient's record.

Report any abnormal findings to the relevant clinician.

Sample Processing and Specimen Management

Receive, check and process biological samples received into the practice in accordance with laboratory requirements and practice procedures.

Ensure specimens are correctly labelled and matched to the appropriate patient and request forms.

Prepare specimens for collection and transportation in accordance with laboratory guidance.

Maintain accurate records of specimens received, processed and dispatched.

Identify and escalate any discrepancies, unsuitable specimens or laboratory rejections.

Ensure samples are dispatched within required timescales to maintain specimen integrity.

Maintain sufficient stocks of specimen containers, request forms and associated consumables.

Clinical Room Preparation and Stock Management

Ensure clinical rooms are appropriately prepared and stocked before each clinical session.

Monitor stock levels and replenish consumables as required.

Ensure equipment required for phlebotomy, ECGs, blood pressure monitoring and specimen management is available and fit for purpose.

Report equipment faults and stock shortages promptly.

Assist with the ordering and organisation of clinical supplies as required.

Infection Prevention and Control Responsibilities

Adhere to the Practice's Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) policies and procedures at all times.

Ensure designated clinical refrigerators are cleaned routinely and maintained in accordance with current national guidance, manufacturer recommendations and practice policies.

Complete and maintain all required fridge cleaning and monitoring records.

Remove clinical waste from clinical areas and ensure disposal is undertaken in accordance with organisational policies and waste management regulations.

Replace sharps containers in accordance with the Practice's IPC Policy, health and safety requirements and manufacturer guidance.

Ensure sharps bins are assembled, labelled, maintained and disposed of safely.

Maintain high standards of cleanliness and tidiness within all clinical areas.

Report any infection prevention, health and safety or environmental concerns promptly.

Administrative Duties

Maintain accurate, complete and contemporaneous patient records.

Ensure all clinical activities are appropriately coded and recorded within the clinical system.

Manage appointment schedules efficiently.

Participate in audits and quality improvement initiatives as required.

Contribute to the effective running of the clinical service.

Professional Responsibilities

Work within the limits of competence and seek advice when required.

Maintain strict patient confidentiality in accordance with GDPR, Caldicott principles and practice policies.

Attend mandatory training and relevant continuing professional development activities.

Participate in appraisal, supervision and personal development processes.

Work collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team.

Comply with all practice policies and procedures, including safeguarding, health and safety, equality and diversity, and information governance requirements.

Secondary key responsibilities

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Phlebotomist may be requested to:

Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead

Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care

Support and participate in shared learning within the organisation

We are an established training and teaching practice located in large friendly village of Marple, South Stockport, with a patient list size of c7,000.

Our team comprises 2 GP Partners, 2 salaried GPs, supported by a multidisciplinary team including 2 Practice Nurses, 1 HCA, a First Contact Practitioner, and an Advanced Practitioner, alongside experienced and skilled administrative staff.

We value a strong, cohesive team and foster it through social coffee and lunch breaks, regular team and clinical meetings, dedicated training, team-building activities, and social events to promote a positive work culture.

We are part of the Stockport SES PCN, working closely with PCN colleagues and ARRS staff to enhance capacity and maintain high standards of patient care.

We offer placements to medical students and GP trainees at various stages of their careers, fostering valuable learning experiences.
