Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Stoma Nurse Specialist position within the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, supporting the Colorectal Service across various sites. This role offers a chance to join an experienced team of Stoma Nurses in the Digestive and Emergency Surgery Care Group, contributing to the multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

This position offers an exciting opportunity for a skilled and experienced Stoma Nurse to contribute to the development of colorectal services while working within a well-supported, specialist team. Working alongside the consultants and ward teams to develop and enhance stoma pathways, making it an excellent choice for those looking to expand their expertise and leadership capabilities within the field of stoma care.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Expertise:Provide clinical care and advice to patients with stomas, particularly those undergoing bowel resections, cystectomies, and stoma formation surgeries.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration:Work closely with medical staff, dietitians, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to manage patient care.
  • Autonomous Practice:Lead nurse-led clinics and participate in clinical audits to ensure high standards of care.
  • Education and Training:Provide education to patients, staff, and the wider multidisciplinary team, across multiple sites.
  • Patient Support: Offer ongoing support to patients with established stomas and refer them to community services as needed.

Key Requirements:

  • Experience:Extensive experience in Stoma nursing, with the ability to maintain and develop expertise in various aspects of stoma care.
  • Communication Skills:Strong communication skills are essential to interact with patients, families, and healthcare teams effectively.
  • Autonomy and Leadership:Ability to work autonomously, providing leadership and guidance within a small, highly skilled team.
  • Cross-Site Flexibility:Work across different sites within the Trust, providing flexibility to cover any gaps within the team and ensuring continuity of care for patients across all service locations.
  • Trauma and Complex Care: As part of your role, you will also be involved in managing complex cases, particularly at the Aintree site, which is a trauma centre. This offers exposure to a diverse range of challenging cases, including trauma-related stoma care, as well as patients with multi-faceted medical needs. You will also need to be experienced in caring for patients on cancer pathways, particularly at the Royal site, which is where the majority of colorectal cancer surgeries take place.
