Job summary

If you enjoy turning complex, real-world data into reliable, usable information that supports better decision-making, this could be a highly rewarding role for you.

At NHS Greater Manchester, we are bringing together data from across health and care partners, including NHS providers, local authorities and public sources. Our aim is to better understand demand, improve services, tackle inequalities and enable better outcomes for the 3.3 million people we serve.

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will play a key role in this ambition. You will design and develop the data pipelines that underpin our Analytics and Data Science Platform (ADSP) - a Snowflake-based data lake house used daily by analysts, data scientists, finance teams and senior leaders across the system.

This is a hands-on technical role within a modern, cloud-first environment. You will work with data in many formats (such as CSV, JSON, XML, APIs and Parquet), building robust, well-tested pipelines and delivering high-quality, production-ready datasets that colleagues can rely on. Your work will directly support system-wide priorities, from urgent care and community services to population health and contract monitoring.

If you are looking for a role where your technical skills can make a real difference across a whole health and care system, and where you will be supported to learn and grow, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

Design, build and maintain scalable data pipelines to ingest, transform and publish data from a range of partners into our Snowflake platform. Work with a modern cloud-based technology stack including Azure, Snowflake, Matillion, Python, dbt and OpenFlow. Translate requirements from analysts, data scientists and stakeholders into clear data models and reliable data solutions. Support live pipelines through monitoring, troubleshooting and continuous improvement.

Contribute to the development of our cloud data architecture, metadata and documentation, maintaining high standards of code quality through testing, peer review and DevOps practices. Collaborate across teams, working in Agile sprints to deliver shared priorities. Ensure data engineering practices are secure, well-governed and cost-effective.

We are looking for someone with experience in building data pipelines, data modelling and working with complex datasets. Strong SQL skills (including optimisation and stored procedures) and at least one programming language such as Python are essential. You should understand data warehousing concepts and have an interest in modern cloud platforms.

You will be collaborative, solutions-focused and committed to producing well-documented code. We offer mentoring, peer support and opportunities to develop skills in cloud technologies such as Azure and Snowflake.

Job description

Full details, including the complete person specification and our ways of working are in the attached Job Description & Person Specification.

About us

Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) are partnerships of health and care organisations that come together to plan and deliver joined up services and to improve the health and wellbeing of people who live and work in their area. Their purpose is to improve outcomes in population health and healthcare; tackle inequalities in outcomes, experience, and access; enhance productivity and value for money and support broader social and economic development in their area efficiency. This will be delivered in neighbourhood, place, combinations of places and GM system.

Our NHS People Promise

Our NHS People Promise -the promise we must all make to each other, to work together to improve the experience of working in the NHS for everyone. Like many other employers, NHS GM currently has evidence of unwarranted inequalities in the workforce, most notably in relation to minoritised ethnic, female and\or disabled staff and their intersectionality. As a result, we will use positive action measures to bring benefits to our organisation, including a wider pool of talented, skilled and experienced people from which to recruit and a better understanding of the needs of a more diverse range of customers.
