Job summary

One advanced Clinical Nutrition full-time fully funded Fellowship is available at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This newly available post will offer advanced training in nutrition as well as additional specialist IBD and coeliac disease experience. This will provide a great opportunity for an out-of-programme experience (OOPE) or training (OOPT) for UK trainees looking to develop expertise in these areas, or for international candidates, and could be a springboard into research within the department.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the Gastroenterology out-of-hours cover rota, and to weekday emergency endoscopy and ward referral weeks at <=1:12 frequency. The latter provides an opportunity to enhance endoscopic management of upper GI bleed and provide supported consultations for inpatients. As with all 6 Senior Clinical Fellows in Oxford, the endoscopy sessions are flexible and may need to be worked on a Saturday. It is important to note that there is no General (Internal) Medicine commitment in this post.

Job description

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the Hepatology and Gastroenterology out-of-hours cover rota, and to weekday emergency endoscopy and ward referral weeks at 1:12 frequency. The latter provides an opportunity to enhance management of hepatology inpatient referrals, and endoscopic management of variceal haemorrhage.

One of the significant strengths of our department are the multiple opportunities to attend clinical and research meetings throughout the week. Clinical meetings include luminal histopathology, luminal radiology, plus clinical multidisciplinary meetings including the intestinal transplant and intestinal failure MDTs, and the IBD MDT. Uniquely our department also has a weekly academic afternoon with a range of clinical and research focused learning opportunities, in addition to which there is a weekly journal club. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to departmental research through the management of gastroenterology and nutrition clinical trials and other projects or audit, under appropriate guidance. It would suit someone wishing to develop Clinical Nutrition and IBD subspecialist expertise beyond that acquired through general gastroenterology training before a consultant post. The Unit is well recognized for its international diversity and the posts attract the best trainees from many areas of the world.

About us

Clinical activity will be under the supervision of Dr Emma Culver (Fellowship Programme Director) and Dr Philip Allan (Clinical Nutrition Lead) and nominated Consultant colleagues. Clinical Nutrition is one of the strengths of the department, with a combination of clinical and basic science expertise whose integration is a singular feature of our translational unit. We serve a home parenteral nutrition (HPN) cohort of 67 patients, have over 30 Type 2 IF patients, and we have undertaken 58 intestinal transplants in 56 patients with a number of patients on the waiting list. Current research projects available include non- invasive assessment of IF associated liver disease (IFALD), PEG outcomes in Head and Neck cancer patients, and looking at factors that affect intestinal transplant outcomes. The Nutrition and Intestinal failure teams include 5 specialist nurses, 2 specialist pharmacists, 4 members of the vascular access team, and 3 dieticians, who are all closely integrated with the unit across the John Radcliffe and Churchill sites.
