Job summary

This post is a 12-month Orthopaedic Hand/Wrist and Trauma Fellowship delivered through Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

The purpose of this fellowship is to produce orthopaedic hand/wrist surgeons who are well versed in the breadth and depth of hand/wrist surgery and orthopaedic trauma. The fellowship provides high-quality advanced training, building on the skills achieved by certification and enabling the fellow to contribute with increasing independence as part of the multidisciplinary team managing elective and emergency hand, wrist and trauma conditions.

The fellowship also includes general Trauma & Orthopaedic trauma experience, enabling fellows to maintain and develop core trauma competencies that remain essential for future consultant practice

Main duties of the job

ICHNHST offers the full range of medical and surgical care to the local area, as well as specialist Trauma & Orthopaedic care to the wider region. Our unit is in a position to offer a unique experience to a senior hand fellow, covering the breadth of orthopaedic hand, wrist and trauma surgery: fixation, reconstruction, elective hand and wrist care, and trauma management, in a well-established, busy unit with close working relationships, strong academic and teaching experience, and a long history of successful fellowships.

We are already experienced in providing post-CCT fellowships in a number of areas across Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery. We have Pelvic, Knee, Hip, Limb Reconstruction, Shoulder & Elbow, and Foot & Ankle post-CCT fellows.

The post will start in October 2026 for 12 months.

Job description

The post is aimed at highly motivated individuals who want to extend their knowledge, skills and competences in niche areas of Hand/Wrist Surgery. Fellows must be on the Specialist Register and ideally within two years of achieving certification. The 12-month fellowship, focusing on disorders of the hand and wrist, is targeted at surgeons who have completed training in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery. The fellowship offers 12 months of intensive training and is suitable for candidates who have a demonstrable interest in the specific sub-specialty of Hand Surgery.

Based within the Trauma & Orthopaedic Department, the fellowship offers advanced training in hand, wrist and trauma surgery within a busy central London Major Trauma Centre. Fellows will work as part of a highly specialised multidisciplinary team, with regular interaction and joint decision-making alongside Plastic Surgery, Rheumatology, Radiology and Hand Therapy. This collaborative environment provides a unique opportunity to develop expertise in the assessment and management of complex hand and wrist conditions, while gaining a comprehensive understanding of both operative and non-operative treatment pathways

This post does not include on-call, but additional on-call shifts can be agreed and funded locally.
