Posted 10 August 2026 Closing date 28 August 2026

Job summary

The Middlesbrough Children and Young Peoples Service is based at The Rosewood centre on the site of Acklam Road Hospital, which is also the base for many specialist child and adolescent mental health services, alongside a child and adolescent inpatient suite. This allows for good working links with colleagues across specialities.

The population of the local authority area is approx. 136,000, with approximately 25% of them being under the age of 18.

Post holder will not be responsible for undertaking initial assessments as those are undertaken by other clinicians on the rota basis. Requests for psychiatric involvement are discussed on routine basis within MDT meeting or within daily team huddles for emergency cases.

It is anticipated that the post holder will have a caseload of approximately 80 patients including both patients open for ongoing monitoring of ADHD medication and young people prescribed medication to support management of mental health conditions such as anxiety.

Direct patient contact would include new patients to service, new psychiatric assessments and review appointments. Main conditions would be expected to include ADHD, ASD, Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, Eating Disorders, Tic Disorders, Psychosis, Self-harm, Conduct Disorder and Sleep disorders. The Trust has several person-centred pathways of care developed specifically for young people and the post holder would generally be expected to follow these.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have responsibility for the assessment and management of mental and/or behavioural needs of children and young people presenting with mental disorder and requiring assessment for neurodevelopmental needs.

Post holder may be required to provide advice to CAMHS Crisis Team in relation to children and young people residing within Middlesbrough area regardless if they are currently open to the GMH team.

The post holder is expected to offer mental health assessment, psychiatric opinions, diagnosis and holistic care plans for patients up to the age of 18, referred to them in hours and when on call. The Trust expects about 2 new patient assessments per week with 650 face to face contacts per year; this is for a full-time consultant, but exact figures can vary, depending upon the type of work undertaken, in agreement in job planning. In Middlesbrough GMH team initial assessments are undertaken by the wider MDT. Consultants will only see new patients who specifically require psychiatric input.

About us

We are one of the largest specialist mental health and learning disabilities trusts in the country, with an annual income of £320m and a workforce of some 6,700 staff operating from around 100 sites in Durham, Teesside, North Yorkshire and York and Selby. We provide a range inpatient and community services to 2m people living in County Durham, the Tees Valley, Scarborough, Whitby, Ryedale, Harrogate, Hambleton and Richmondshire. We also provide additional specialist services to other parts of Northern England.

We deliver our services by working in partnership with eight local authorities and clinical commissioning groups, a wide range of voluntary organisations, as well as service users, their carers and the public.

Psychiatrists are essential contributors to the majority of our mental health teams. Service users expect and are justified to expect collaborative relationships with dedicated psychiatrists who work consistently as part of effective services. Our medical staffing shortage puts strain on services and puts strain on workforce wellbeing and costs extend beyond the financial. The Medical Directorate and Medical Development Team are striving to improve medical workforce recruitment and retention in a variety of ways and the cornerstone of these efforts is The TEWV Charter for the Medical Workforce. (Please see attached Supporting Document).

The Trust welcomes a conversation about flexible working practices.
