Job summary

GP Practice Nurse 22.5 Hours per Week Monday to Friday on a rotational 4 week rota.

Week 1 = 21 Hrs -

  • Tuesday 9-6, Wednesday 9-12 & Thursday 9-6

Week 2 = 23 hrs -

  • Monday 9-6, Thursday 9-6 & Friday 1-6

Week 3 = 27 hrs -

  • Monday 9-6, Thursday 9-6 & Friday 9-6

Week 4 = 19 hrs -

  • Monday 1-6, Thursday 9-4.30 & Friday 9-4.30

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, highly motivated nurse to join our nursing team. A nurse with a special interest in Chronic diseases / Dementia / Frailty or Womens Health would be preferable but not essential.

Duties to include immunisations, cervical cytology, ECGs, Phlebotomy, chronic disease management, travel advice and wound care, training will be provided if necessary.

The role also provides an exciting opportunity to work alongside another Practice Nurse within our research team.

You will be involved in:

  • Reviewing research opportunities and assessing their suitability for the practice
  • Supporting the practice in delivering research studies
  • Consulting with patients who have been recruited to research studies
  • Working collaboratively with the wider research team

Full training will be provided

Salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience with the opportunity to join the NHS Pension Scheme.

£19 - £22 per hour dependent on experience.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an RGN with current NMC registration.

An ability to work independently and autonomously is essential. Support will be provided by the Duty GP.

The practice will support the successful candidate in developing their skills as required.

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Practice Nurse

ROLE:To provide effective nursing services for the practice population.

KEY TASKS

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of patients in the treatment room and will, when required:

1) Administer immunisation vaccinations and other injections to patients, as prescribed by the Doctors.

2) Carry out blood sugar and haemoglobin measurement, urine tests, ECGs and any other patient investigations as ordered by the Doctors.

3) Assist Doctors in performing gynaecological or other examination, as required.

4) Carry out cervical cytology.

5) Retain responsibility for patient continuing wound care, with referral to Doctors if necessary.

6) Provide a phlebotomy service for patients alongside the healthcare team

7) Carry out medication reviews as per practice protocols e.g. Hypertension, Pill checks, Hypothyroid

8) Operate a childhood vaccination clinic.

9) Carry out annual Asthma reviews and refer to GP if appropriate

10) Maintain adequate stocks of drugs and supplies, in the treatment room and examination room.

11) Ensure adequate cleaning and sterilising of equipment.

12) Promote healthy living and lifestyles for all patients.

13) Assist in the management of patients with chronic disease particularly patients with Asthma/COPD providing nursing support through face to face consultation and telephone reviews.

14) Assist in the induction and training of new staff along with trainee registrars and medical students.

15) Perform any other nursing tasks as required by the practice.

16) Identify vaccinations required for foreign travel and operate a travel clinic, giving relevant vaccinations/advice and discussing malaria prophylaxis.

17) Nurses holding the community nursing prescribing qualification will prescribe as appropriate from the formulary for dressings and wound management.

PROFESSIONALISM

Practice nurses will:

1) Keep accurate, contemporaneous electronic patient records for each patient in the appropriate manner.

2) Be aware of, and work in accordance with, all practice policies and protocols relevant to your role.

3) Identify their own training needs and actively participate in any training identified as being necessary by their manager or employer.

4) Participate in the training of new nursing staff.

5) Attend regular staff meetings, to maintain adequate communication.

6) Participate in staff development and performance review on which salary increments will be based.

7) Report to Practice/Assistant Manager any complaint, accidents, or any untoward incidents.

8) Work at all times in accordance with the NMCs code of professional conduct and the scope of professional practice.

9) Act as a resource for information and advice to other nurses in the team.

PERSONAL

Practice nurses will:

1) Be aware of and work in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act thereby working in a safe efficient manner.

2) Adhere to the uniform policy of the practice, always having a neat and tidy appearance.

3) Work contracted hours and holiday cover as per duty rota and extra hours by mutual agreement, to meet the demands of the practice.

4) Perform their duties in a calm, professional and competent manner.

Research

  • Co-ordinate, manage and liaise between GP's, staff and research teams to maximise recruitment opportunities in the Practice
  • The pro-active management of all research activity in the practice under guidance of the Practice lead for research.
  • Update research tracker for all new research studies.
  • Summarise all research studies and send summary to research GP partners for approval
  • Submit Expression of Interests (EOI) even if its a Yes or No
  • Invoice for each approved study (if required)
  • Delegate as appropriate to the Business Support Administrator
  • Attend Cluster Meetings/ Research Meetings
  • Attend Bi-monthly meetings with Networks Engagement Officers.
  • Attend six-month performance review meeting with the Research Delivery Manager and Engagement Officer
  • Maintain paper and electronic copies of research information
  • Maintain GCP accreditation
  • Submission of sites monthly research activity reports to CRN Y&H.
  • Participation in approved studies, running clinics, liaising with patients either face to face or by telephone while adhering to study specific guidelines.
