Job summary

The Vascular Laboratory at King's College Hospital is looking to recruit an experienced, accredited Clinical Vascular Scientist to join our friendly and highly skilled team in this exciting part-time opportunity.

Based within our newly refurbished vascular laboratory, you will work in a modern, purpose-built environment equipped with state-of-the-art ultrasound technology, supporting the delivery of a comprehensive vascular diagnostic service across the Trust.

This role is ideally suited to an experienced vascular scientist with expertise that extends beyond the scope of a newly qualified practitioner. You will be competent in performing, interpreting and independently reporting a broad range of complex vascular ultrasound investigations, providing high-quality diagnostic information to support patient care.

King's is a tertiary referral centre with an interesting and complex caseload which gives rise to opportunity to innovate and develop clinical pathways.

Main duties of the job

As one of the senior members of the team, you will undertake a varied clinical workload while playing a key role in the day-to-day running of the department. You will supervise and support junior colleagues, contribute to workforce development through teaching and training of both qualified staff and trainees, and help maintain the high standards of clinical practice within the service.

You will also take a leading role in quality improvement, service development and audit, working collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to continually enhance patient care and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the vascular laboratory.

Job description

Clinical and Scientific

  • Perform, interpret and report independently on specialist diagnostic tests on patients in response to request from clinicians.
  • Analyse requests from clinicians and select appropriate tests and prioritize them according to clinical need and resources available.
  • Communicate clearly and sensitively with patients undergoing tests and assist in their preparation for tests. Communicate reasons for and results of tests to patients as necessary.
  • Conduct vascular diagnostic tests using ultrasound and other equipment to obtain images and measurements necessary for successful conclusion of the tests.
  • Recognize when the test is sub-optimal and select and execute alternative tests where necessary.
  • Be able to interpret complex anatomy and pathology in order to provide clear diagnostic findings.
  • Make complex interpretive judgements based on interactively acquired ultrasound blood flow data and imaging.
  • Record test information clearly and accurately in appropriate media.
  • Communicate results and diagnostic information to referring clinicians with appropriate urgency including alerting the clinician when urgent further investigation or treatment is indicated. Be able to communicate complex information clearly to clinicians to enable effective decisions.
  • Ensure that all tests are conducted and reported to agreed protocols in accordance with protocols and with best practice
  • Be responsible for patients safety and well-being during tests. Responsible for ensuring due care for patients who may present with a range of illnesses.
  • Ensure that all procedures are carried out within trust guidelines for infection control.
  • Perform specialised ultrasound procedures during surgery. Take appropriate precaution against infection when performing measurements in the surgical field.
  • Perform, report and record vascular tests including ultrasound examinations for clinical trials in accordance with specific trial protocols.
  • Represent the vascular laboratory staff at joint clinical review meetings including weekly vascular team meetings,
  • Propose changes to vascular laboratory procedures to improve patient care pathways. Contribute to the review and modification of service protocols in response to internal or external demands. Audit effectiveness of changes in procedures and protocols.
  • Perform these clinical duties at all sites of the organisation and others as needed as directed by the needs of the department and the head of service.
  • Act as most senior scientist on duty ensuring safe practice within the department
