Job summary

? Accountable for leading and managing the provision of training, development, and clinical support for Acute Medicine to meet the needs of the service.

? Accountable for leading and managing the provision of training, development and clinical support for pre-registration nurses and other professional trainees.

? The post holder is responsible for the continued advancement of high quality nursing care and practice specific to the needs of the service.

? Provide expert advice to nursing colleagues and medics in how to manage deteriorating

patients.

? Be trained and able to work at an advanced level to give support to patients requiring critical care transfer.

Main duties of the job

Collaborate with the Matron, Band 7s, Practice Educators and acute services for the delivery of flexible, integrated services.

? Ensures staff develop a patient-centered approach that provides clinically effective and safe care to meet a wide range of needs for patients and their significant others.

? Act as a change agent and professional lead to ensure ongoing development of services to achieve local, network and national practice recommendations now and in the future.

? Provide effective clinical leadership of the department in conjunction with and in the absence of the senior leadership team.

? Maintain own practice at an exemplary level and act as a resource for all levels of staff.

? Promote collaboration with all disciplines to meet patient needs.

? Support the leadership team in providing effective clinical leadership and management of staff.

? Maintain the environment of care to the highest standard.

? Provide expert advice and emergency care to emergency medical admissions educating the nursing and medical team.

Job description

Communication

Ensure effective day to day communication on all aspects of care between staff, patients and their significant others in sensitive, difficult or distressing circumstances. Take a lead in highly sensitive circumstances where barriers to communication exist and support less experienced staff in this process.

Maintain effective communications within the team. Be conversant with and share all department and Trust communications.

Training and Development:Assess the training needs of staff based on staff appraisals utilising the Education hub system.

Develop training plans

Monitor and support delivery of annual appraisals for all levels of staff based upon their KSF outlines. Participate in process as delegated for a group of staff.

Achieve competencies for Band 6 Knowledge, Skills Framework (KSF) and take responsibility for pursuing own professional development.

Identify areas of practice development that promote the continued advancement of the service and lead on their implementation.

Support the development of specialist professional knowledge, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and experience.

Develop in-house training programs for The Acute Medical Unit and assess their effectiveness.

Maintain comprehensive induction programs for staff.

Develop supportive resources for staff development.

Encourage the appropriate sharing of knowledge and skills within the team and involve other staff in the delivery of training as required.

Deliver education and training packages on an individual or group basis.

Represent the Division at Trust, Network and Higher Education forums and share good practice.

Evaluate the effectiveness of training and development. Ensure feedback to staff.

Ensure access to all mandatory training for all staff.

Ensure assessment, supervision and mentorship mechanisms are in place for all staff and pre-registration students to meet their course requirements.

Ensure training for all clinical developments and new equipment.

Maintain and provide records of all training activities including: local training, equipment specific training, safer handling training, Mandatory training etc.

Access support and supervision to enhance own continued development as required.

Support the welfare, development and supervision of all staff and act as a mentor/assessor as required.

Leading and managing the provision of training development and clinical support for all levels of staff and pre-registration nurses.

Delegate authority for training and supervision where appropriate whilst retaining accountability, ensuring staff understands their individual responsibilities and limits of authority.

Professional Responsibilities

Maintain registration with the NMC and comply with statutory requirements.

Participate and lead developmental activities as required and contribute to the development of nursing guidelines/protocols.

STANDARDS OF CONDUCT

Ensure that personal actions and conduct comply with the Trust Policies and Procedures e.g. Health and Safety, No Smoking Policy, equal opportunities, confidentiality, the Data Protection Act (1998), Moving and Handling Regulations.

Attend training courses as required e.g. induction, moving and handling, fire lectures etc.

Key performance objectives, development needs and compilation of a Personal Development Plan will be discussed and agreed at Annual Development Review meetings.
