Job summary
We're looking for a reliable, professional and flexible individual to join our Bank Driver team in Whitehaven.
As part of our Out of Hours service, you'll safely transport clinicians to patient visits and support urgent primary care across West Cumbria. You'll work closely with clinicians, the Control Room and operational colleagues to help ensure services run safely and efficiently.
This flexible bank position provides cover for annual leave, sickness, increased demand and service requirements. Shifts are available across evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays.
As our service operates 24/7, applicants should be flexible, including availability for bank holidays and short-notice shifts.

Main duties of the job
To provide a safe, professional and responsive driving and operational support service to clinicians delivering Out of Hours care. The post holder will transport clinicians to patient visits and provide support where required, contributing to safe, timely and effective patient care.
This includes assisting clinicians with equipment, supporting communication with the Control Room, and helping to maintain efficient visit flow. The post holder will also support the safe management of vehicles, medical equipment and stock, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team across Cumbria Health sites.

Job description
This list of duties and responsibilities, which follows, represents the broad range of tasks which may be required to be undertaken either routinely or periodically. This list is not exhaustive and the role may include additional duties which are not listed here.
Driving Responsibilities and Safety
- All drivers must be medically fit to drive and meet the required standards in line with DVLA guidance. Cumbria Health reserves the right to require a driver medical and/or sight test as part of the recruitment process or during employment where appropriate.
- Maintain responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle, including the safety of passengers and equipment whilst on duty.
- Drive clinicians to patient visits safely and efficiently during the out-of-hours period.
- Adhere to all road traffic laws and drive in accordance with Cumbria Health policies, using vehicle systems (e.g. Webfleet) appropriately.
- Maintain awareness of legal responsibilities when using communication devices whilst driving.
- Respond flexibly to service demand, including travelling across the wider Cumbria footprint as directed by the Control Room Supervisor to support safe and effective service delivery.
Operational Support to Clinicians
- Support clinicians during visits, including assisting with equipment, communication with the Control Room and acting as a chaperone where required (in line with policy).
- Assist in completing patient contact forms in the event of system or technology failure.
- Alert Emergency Services when required, following clinician guidance.
- Support efficient patient flow by maintaining clear and timely communication with the Control Room.
Vehicle, Equipment and Stock Management
- Carry out thorough pre-shift vehicle and equipment checks, ensuring readiness for service.
- Ensure all technology is functional, charged and stored safely.
- Carry out post-shift checks and restock equipment as required.
- Responsible for the safe handling and tracking of prescriptions during shifts, ensuring they are logged and managed in line with Cumbria Health procedures.
- Support the replenishment and management of clinical stock and equipment during and at the end of shifts, ensuring vehicles and equipment are maintained at appropriate levels for safe service delivery.
- Assist with the transfer, transport and documentation of Controlled Drugs in accordance with policy.
Base and Site Responsibilities
- Ensure effective handover between shifts, including communication with incoming drivers, clinicians and Control Room.
- While primarily deployed to support community visits, drivers are required to remain in the base with clinicians during overnight shifts, to support patient care and the safe and smooth running of the service, in line with the Lone Working Policy.
Communication and Team Working
- Maintain clear, professional and timely communication with the Control Room, receptionist, clinicians and wider team.
- Complete and maintain accurate driver diaries during each shift, ensuring entries are clear, timely and support safe coordination and audit requirements.
Governance, Compliance and Development
- Keep up to date with and adhere to the Driver Handbook and all relevant Cumbria Health policies and procedures.
- Regularly access and use email and internal systems to stay updated on communications, guidance and service information.
- Use the Staff Hub system to view and book shifts in line with service processes and requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with Information Governance and GDPR requirements.
- Participate in mandatory training and ongoing development to remain compliant and competent in the role.
The post holder will be expected to undertake any other duties reasonably required, which are appropriate to the role and within the scope of their training and capability.
