Job summary

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to work as a staff nurse on the Haematology and Young Oncology Day unit services at the Christie Hospital in Manchester. This role includes providing a high standard of care for patients with haematological malignancies, lymphoma and teenage oncology patients attending the day care unit, working within a recognised framework in accordance with NMC Code of Professional Conduct, The Christie Policies and Health and Safety Legislation. We require a nurse who is eager to learn new skills, such as cannulation, venepuncture, Chemotherapy giving, providing support to all our patients, and continued learning and development through the role to enhance patient care.

Working hours- Monday to Friday open hours 8-6

Main duties of the job

You should possess good communication and organizational skills, previous basic IT experience and experience with Haematology/oncology patients.

It is essential that you are able to work in an orderly and systematic manner, possess good literacy, numeracy, communication and organizational skills. You should have a caring attitude, as well as the ability to work effectively under direction as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Basic understanding of Haematology and Oncology, previous nurse experience, skills- looking after an unwell patient, venepuncture, cannulation, UKONS (non-essential can be supported with once in post).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Professional

1. Take individual responsibility for the nursing care of a group of patients as a registered nurse.

2. To welcome patients to the unit.

3. Perform procedures required of the role and be prepared to learn new skills relevant to the role including therapeutic apheresis.

4. To participate in rotation to TYA day unit as required

5. Ensure that blood products are administered correctly and in accordance with Hospital Procedure and Policy.

6. Ensure that prescribed drugs and treatments are given correctly and in accordance with the Hospital procedure and policy and work within NMC guidelines.

7. Administer both infusion and bolus chemotherapy via established central lines and peripheral cannula in line with Trust policies.

8. Assist in the checking of and safe administration of intrathecal chemotherapy according to national guidelines and trust policy.

9. Provide a supportive role within the Unit for nursing, medical and clerical staff

10. Collect blood products from key departments.

11. Undertake the nursing care of patients, ensuring privacy & dignity is maintained whilst being aware of physical and psychological needs

12. To give a clear and accurate update at change of duties and ensure accurate documentation of nursing interventions

13. Ensure the safety of patients, liaising closely with the unit co-ordinator, medical staff, specialist and research nurses, bed manager and other staff as appropriate.

14. To liaise as needed with referring hospitals, GPs and community nursing teams.

15. Participate in nursing procedures appropriate to the department

16. Support and assist in the induction/training of junior staff/Health Care Assistants acting as mentor to designated staff

17. To highlight areas of improvement/development within the department and undertake relevant projects

18. Assist in the provision of meals / refreshments for patients.

19. Assist in the general housekeeping duties of the unit

20. Help to maintain a safe environment and report faults/risks etc to the nurse in charge

21. Liaise with staff member responsible for stores/stationery and ordering and assist in the maintenance of stock levels

22. Correct care and custody of controlled drugs and aid the safe storage of medicines

23. Assist medical staff with procedures.

EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

1. The staff nurse is responsible for their own personal development and maintaining a personal development plan

2. To complete the Ward introductory pack and preceptor pack

3. Complete Principles and Practice of Intravenous Skills Programme and Cannulation Skills Training and update as required

4. Annually attend all mandatory study days as per Trust and unit guidance

PERSONAL

1. Demonstrate a pleasant and approachable manner and help create and promote a good working relationship

2. Show professional and courteous manner when answering the telephone and other enquires

3. Maintain confidentiality with regard to patient information both at work and outside of working hours

4. To be aware of and adhere to all policies including; sickness and absence, confidentiality, uniform and responsibilities under the Health and Safety at work act and be familiar with all risk assessments pertinent to the unit.

5. Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy

6. To be aware of limitations and utilise the preceptor system for any issues that arise

7. To show respect for members of the team and endorse the units philosophy of giving mutual support
