This is an exciting opportunity for a Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist. Initially this is a permanent, part time, 18.75 hours post within the Intensive Support Team based in Hanley at the Hope Centre

We are seeking a highly motivated, organised and skilled Speech and Language Therapist with a background or previous experience in Learning Disabilities, to work as part of our dedicated Multi-disciplinary Team

The post holder will be expected to provide assessment, diagnosis and appropriate speech and language therapy intervention for clients in collaboration with service users, their carers and other professionals to respond to episodes of challenging behaviour/crisis intervention.

Support in the role is from an experienced Senior Speech and Language Therapist, who will provide guidance/support with continued professional development. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who enjoys a variety of work where each day brings satisfaction and new challenges.

Main duties of the job

Working as a member of the Intensive Support Team (IST) The Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) will manage a defined caseload, consistent with high quality evidence-based practice work.

The role specifically includes the assessment, care planning, care delivery, signposting and education of a client's speech, language, communication, eating, drinking and swallowing needs.

The SALT practitioner will work to the IST Model of care and intervention. To provide community based rapid response, intensive assessment, treatment and interventions to individuals with highly complex needs who are experiencing an increase in personal difficulties. To provide a realistic alternative to hospital admission by providing intensive support to service users within their own community settings at the time they most need it to avoid further deterioration. To enhance staff and carers skills in supporting people with a learning disability who challenge services. The service is wholly committed to the use of Person-Centred Planning approaches and affording adults with learning disabilities opportunities to maximize full citizenship, choice and control.

Job description

To provide assessment, diagnosis and appropriate SALT intervention in collaboration with the clients, their carers, and other professionals to respond to episodes of challenging behaviour/crisis intervention.

Demonstrate the clear and effective use of outcome measures for all clients

To manage their own time and have an ability to prioritise tasks with minimal support

To identify the need for clinical support and advice and seek this from more senior clinicians as appropriate in order to provide a high-quality service.

To work closely with all appropriate agencies and colleagues for exchange of information and to ensure the comprehensive management of the client, as advised by a designated supervisor and / or more senior clinician.

To provide appropriate information, advice and support to clients and their carers, demonstrating empathy and ensuring that effective communication is achieved where barriers to understanding exist.

Produce, disseminate and update reports and guidelines using a range of media software and to ensure that these are accessible to people with learning disabilities and their carers, ensuring that all reasonable adjustments have been made and take account of peoples culture and language e.g. Change, Widget, Board maker, Publisher, Makaton, BSL and the Trusts Interpretation and translation service etc.
