The department is a busy working environment looking after children with acute illness and injuries

Main duties of the job

1. Clinical Care:

Provide skilled nursing care to children and young people with a variety of acute and emergency presentations.

Conduct triage, assessments, and initiate appropriate treatment plans.

Recognise and manage deteriorating patients, escalating concerns appropriately.

Administer medications safely, following hospital guidelines.

2. Leadership & Supervision:

Support junior nurses, student nurses, and healthcare assistants through supervision, teaching, and mentorship.

Act as a shift leader when required, ensuring safe staffing levels and effective patient flow.

Work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team, including doctors, advanced practitioners, and allied health professionals.

3. Communication & Teamwork:

Maintain clear, accurate documentation and effective handovers.

Communicate sensitively with children, families, and carers, providing reassurance and support.

Advocate for patients and ensure safeguarding concerns are appropriately managed.

4. Professional Development & Governance:

Participate in training, audits, and quality improvement initiatives within the department.

Maintain up-to-date clinical skills and mandatory training.

Job description

Carry out duties in keeping with NMC Code of Conduct and ensure other members of nursing staff practice within said code.

Sets and monitors standards of quality nursing care over a 24-hour period by co-coordinating the care given by nurses, medical staff and social workers, alongside any other professionals directly involved in patient care on the department.

Supervises the delivery of quality nursing care. Praises and corrects team members as appropriate and is involved in personal development of the workforce using KSF/performance review.

Ensure that resources are appropriately are utilised to maximum effectiveness against workload and activity of the Accident & Emergency Department.

Actively contributes to the attainment of national targets in relation to paediatric emergency care; which include the four-hour standard and ambulance handover standard.

Utilise all the available resources to ensure patient flow through the Emergency Department. Where flow is compromised any barriers to be escalated through the line management structure or command and control structure as deemed appropriate.

To actively respond to changes in the Trust Opel level. To carry out the actions in the clinical escalation plan and support the nursing and medical team in carrying out aforementioned plans.

Responsible for the health, safety and welfare of the staff, patients and visitors under his/her control, as far as is reasonably practicable and in compliance with statutory duty, e.g., C.O.S.H.H. and Manual Handling of Loads. This responsibility to include provision of systems of work; place of work and work equipment that are safe and without risk to health.

Reports on levels of nursing care quality to nurse management.

Ensures that sufficient information is available for relatives and patients, both written and verbal and provides access to further information as required.

Promote and maintain a culture of patient & staff incident reporting in accordance with trust guidelines.

Work within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective team working in the provision of care to ED patients.

Identify and safeguarding concerns and act on them.
