Job summary

To represent the service and provide information to service users as required i.e. GPs, Primary and secondary care professionals, voluntary organisations, patients and their carers. To provide safe practice to all patients referred to the Community Respiratory Team and liaise with Primary and Secondary Care Practitioners regarding the medical management of patients with respiratory problems. To provide specialist advice to colleagues working in other clinical areas and act as the patients advocate. Demonstrate awareness of health and safety aspects of your work and carry out risk assessment within own patient caseload, equipment and environment on a daily basis. Be responsible for safe and competent use of equipment, minimise risk within the team, and implement trust policies were appropriate.(Incident Reporting Policy, Lone Worker Policy and Health and Safety Act 1974)

Main duties of the job

Using knowledge, experience and clinical judgement, to manage respiratory patients using the NICE guidance for safe management in the community. To undertake accurate assessment of patients, including the interpretation and analysis of clinical and non-clinical tests and clinical reasoning to formulate individualised management and treatment plans. This will include spirometry and blood gases. To demonstrate a strong working knowledge of guidelines for best practice. To provide safe practice to all patients referred to the Community Respiratory Team, be able to identify acute deterioration/palliative care needs, take appropriate action and refer on to appropriate agency in a timely manner. To accept clinical responsibility for a designated specialised caseload of patients, and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Respiratory Nurse to work with our Respiratory Nursing service in the borough of Waltham Forest

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual, with excellent communication skills, who is able to work autonomously, as part of the team and to be an integral member of the wider Respiratory teams in supporting people managing the complexities of respiratory management.

The postholder will be involved in facilitating in all aspects of respiratory care , having a sound knowledge of the principles of respiratory/COPD management and care and a keen interest in professional development & advancing with technology. Therefore, experience of teaching and good IT skills is essential.

The post holder will be responsible for carrying out clinical appointments within the Respiratory Service, carrying out patient observation in their homes. Performing spirometry testing in clinic. . Assist patients with checking and using inhalers correctly. Assist with clerical and administrative tasks like booking appointments, tracking equipment.

To further develop Waltham Forest Respiratory services in partnership with Key Stakeholders. Supporting and developing the delivery of high quality; evidence based Respiratory clinical practice throughout the local community, in health centre clinics and patients’ homes. The successful applicant will be required to work closely with the lead Respiratory Nurse, GPs, nursing colleagues, Physiotherapists and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

The ability to travel effectively across the boroughs is necessary, including home visits

Main duties of the job

  • Support the development of high - quality respiratory care throughout the respiratory care pathways, supporting others to do the same through integrated and collaborative working.
  • The respiratory care/education will be delivered in local NHS or community venues, in the patient’s own home or residence, as individual or group sessions as appropriate.
  • To be responsible for own caseload management.
  • To keep accurate and up to date patient records in accordance with local trust, professional body, and legal requirement.
  • To line manage, supervise and appraise junior members of staff and support the development of staff under direct supervision.

Starting with NELFT NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Probationary Period This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

High Cost Area Supplement – Outer London (B&D, Redbridge, Havering and Waltham Forest, CEME) This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,714 to a maximum of £5,941 p.a. pro rata for part time).
