Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Registered Nurse with a Specialist Public Health Nurse ( SCPHN) qualification with significant safeguarding experience to join our Safeguarding Team which is an integral part of the Southend Children and Young People's Public Health service. This post is 22 hours fixed term for 2 years

The Safeguarding Nurse Specialist will support the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children in ensuring that the Southend Children's Public Health Service meets the requirements to safeguard and promote the welfare of children under Section 11 of the Children Act, (2004) and Working Together to Safeguard Children .

The successful candidate will play a key role in the delivery of the safeguarding children's agenda across the Children and Young People's Public Health Service in accordance with national and local guidance and legislation.

The Safeguarding Nurse Specialist will:

Assist the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children in ensuring that the organisation meets its statutory responsibilities for safeguarding children under Section 11 of the Children Act 2004 and in line with statutory guidance Working Together to Safeguard Children.

The post holder will support the delivery of the safeguarding service providing specialist advice, guidance, supervision and training to all Children's Public Health 0-19 operational staff promoting evidenced based professional practice.

The Specialist Nurse will Work with the Named Nurse to monitor safeguarding performance indicators and ensure that all of the services safeguarding policies are robust and reflect national, regional, and local policy.

The post holder will support health professionals in their preparation and contributions to safeguarding multi-agency child protection conferences, strategy and planning meetings including complex case meetings.

The Specialist Nurse will provide representation at Safeguarding Partnership subgroups and to contribute as appropriate to the internal reviews for the service and multi-agency learning reviews as per statutory guidance.

The Specialist Nurse will support the Named Nurse to ensure recommendations of all reviews are embedded into practice where appropriate and required and disseminated across the organisation.

The post holder is required to :

  • To deliver the safeguarding service within the Children, Young People and Families Public Health Service with the Named Nurse providing specialist advice, guidance, supervision, and training to all Public Health 0-19 operational staff members promoting evidence based professional practice.
  • To ensure high quality safeguarding practice throughout the service which is underpinned by National legislation and guidance, Government strategy along with regional and local guidance.
  • To support health professionals in their preparation and contributions to safeguarding multi-agency child protection conferences, strategy and planning meetings including complex case meetings.
  • Contribute to and function as a source of expertise in the writing of policy documents pertaining to Safeguarding.
  • To contribute to the development of both in-house and multi-agency training relating to safeguarding.
  • Deliver programs of Safeguarding training for all staff that come into contact or work directly with adults, children, and young people in the organisation
  • To provide safeguarding supervision with regards to vulnerable children and adults for staff who work directly with children, adults and their families who are employed in the service.
  • Ensure that Safeguarding Children Policies and Procedures, in line with the Southend Essex and Thurrock Safeguarding Children procedures are followed within the service.
  • Lead on safeguarding audits for the service.
  • Be available to provide day to day support to staff in response to presenting safeguarding children and adults concerns including unexpected child deaths.
  • Ensure the dissemination of all recommendations of all reviews are incorporated into practice and disseminated across the service.
  • Provide assistance, representation, or support as requested by the health professional at case conferences, planning or strategy meetings including complex case meetings.
  • Provide representation at Safeguarding Partnership subgroups as required and to contribute as appropriate to the internal reviews for the service and multi-agency learning reviews as per statutory guidance.

About us

The Southend Children & Young People's 0-19 Children's Public Health Service is commissioned and delivered though Public Health in Southend City Council.

In Southend our health visiting and school nursing teams operate within an integrated 0-19 Childrens Public Health service model and incorporates a skill mix team approach to support aspects of service delivery. The service includes Health Liaison Nurses for MASH and MARAC and specialist SCPHN teams, including specialist SCPHN's for SEND and Electively Home Educated Children .
