Calling Speech and Language Therapists!

The Adult Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) department for Mid and North Hampshire provides a service for people aged 18 years and above with acquired communication, voice and/or swallowing difficulties.

We aim to provide quality services that anticipate and respond to the needs of adults who experience acquired speech, language, communication or swallowing difficulties.

We work in partnership with individuals, their families and with other professionals or agencies with the aim of optimising people's wellbeing and their ability to participate in daily life.We see patient at a range of outpatient settings across the North and Mid of Hampshire, as well as remote consultations.

Initial sessions consist of assessment, advice and recommendations. Further treatment will be based on the results of assessment and patient specific. Treatment may include individual or group therapy and a home exercise programme. Advice, education and training to support family and carers will be offered as required.

Role Purpose

To provide SLT assessment, treatment, management and advice to clients with communication and/or swallow disorders in a range of settings. This will include providing advice to carers and other professionals.

This position is suitable for a newly qualified SLT.

Main duties of the job

The SLT will hold their own personal caseload and is independently responsible for those clients and for relating to all relevant people involved with those clients in accordance with local and professional standards and guidelines and following evidence-based practice.

The SLT is accountable for their own professional action, will recognise their own professional boundaries and will seek advice as appropriate. The SLT is supported by more experienced colleagues.

Key responsibilities are to:

*sensitively communicate complex condition related information from assessment to clients/ carers and multi-disciplinary team members.

*demonstrate empathy with clients, carers and colleagues ensuring effective communication is achieved, particularly where barriers to communication exist.

  • manage own time, planning and prioritising tasks as appropriate.
  • collect, collate and provide other service-related statistical information as required.
  • maintain up to date and accurate case notes in line with professional standards and Trust policy.
  • attend staff meetings, specialist meetings and in-service training.
  • participate in clinical supervision/mentoring.
  • Ensure:

o Informed consent to treatment is obtained and documented in accordance with Trust procedures.

o Appropriate risk and other assessments are completed and documented in a timely manner in accordance with Trust policy.
