Job summary

We are seeking a caring and committed Phlebotomist/Health Care Assistant to join our friendly and innovative group of GP Practices in Headington and the surrounding area.

The successful candidate will have previous Phlebotomy experience and will work under the direction of the Nurse Manager, assisting the clinical team in the delivery of a programme of patient care. Working under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager and strictly in accordance with specific Practice guidelines and protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients only as the result of a direct referral from a GP or Nurse Practitioner. The duties may also include any roles agreed between you and the Nurse Manager as appropriate, having regard to current training.

Main duties of the job

The Phlebotomist/Healthcare Assistant will provide high-quality clinical support services, including undertaking venepuncture, accurately recording and processing patient samples, and ensuring specimens are correctly labelled and dispatched to laboratories. The role will involve carrying out a range of patient health assessments and clinical procedures, including blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, NHS Health Checks, diabetic reviews, urinalysis, wound care, immunisations, Doppler assessments, and suture removal. The post holder will support GPs and nurses with minor surgery and other clinical procedures, maintain accurate patient records using EMIS, manage clinical stock, and ensure patient care is delivered safely, professionally, and in line with practice policies and clinical standards.

Job description

  • Obtain blood samples from patients in support of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  • Perform a variety of routine blood drawing procedures, to include venepuncture, using standard equipment.
  • Interact directly with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.
  • Ensure that the patient is comfortable and as relaxed as possible and confirm their agreement to the collection of a blood sample.
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity.
  • Check patient identification against EMIS records and confirming with patient whenever possible.
  • Record collection of blood sample in the patients record using correct nursing templates
  • Ensure samples are stored in appropriate containers
  • Ensure that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff
  • Notify the GP/Nurse of any significant patient issues.
  • Perform various quality control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.

Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as required. Such tasks may include:

  • Blood Pressure monitoring
  • Baseline Tests e.g. BMIs, height, weight monitoring
  • ECG recording
  • HCA Diabetic check
  • Urinalysis
  • NHS health checks
  • Suture removal
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician
  • Assisting GPs and Nurses with minor surgery and coil fittings
  • Ordering stock as and when required.
  • Immunisations flu/B12
  • Doppler
  • Mental Illness Health Checks
  • Wound care
