An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Senior Registered Nurse to join our ward team at Healthcare Management Trust. This is a fixed maternity leave post for 12 months

We are looking for an enthusiastic, compassionate and proactive Registered Nurse with significant surgical nursing experience who is ready to demonstrate clinical leadership and support the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality patient care.

As a Senior Registered Nurse, you will work closely with the Head of Patient Care / Ward Manager and the wider multidisciplinary team. You will provide clinical leadership on the ward, act as a role model for colleagues and deputise for the Ward Manager when required.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Registered Nurse, you will:

  • Take charge of the ward when required, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective patient care.
  • Provide clinical leadership and act as a positive role model for Registered Nurses, Healthcare Support Workers and learners.
  • Deputise for the Head of Patient Care / Ward Manager in their absence.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised programmes of patient care.
  • Provide high-quality nursing care to a diverse range of surgical patients, including patients with complex needs.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to patients whose condition is deteriorating.
  • Supervise and support junior staff, student nurses and new members of the team.
  • Delegate appropriately and ensure that care and clinical tasks are completed to a high standard.
  • Support staff with clinical decision-making and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Work collaboratively with consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, including audits, incident management, investigations and patient safety initiatives.
  • Monitor bed management and escalate issues to the Head of Patient Care / Ward Manager.
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous and confidential patient records.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and contribute to continuous quality improvement.

Job description

Take charge of the Ward, occasionally organising rosters as needed, delegate tasks, supervise staff and respond in a timely and efficient manner to other stakeholder requests, for example consultants.

Work under the guidance of the Line Manager and multidisciplinary team, maintaining excellent nursing standards. Adhering all times in accordance with the NMCthe Code .

The SSN will also serve as a role model for junior staff, consistently demonstrating HMT values and behaviours, promoting a positive and professional work environment. They will be responsible for guiding and supporting junior staff, providing mentorship, and fostering a culture of learning and development.

Deputise for the Head of Patient Care/Ward manager, taking charge of the department in their absence and represent the team at meetings, manage staff including sickness, performance and training needs.

Support the Head of Patient Care/ Ward Manager with the clinical governance agenda including managing concerns, incident management, audit, safety alerts and any patient safety requirements.

Oversee bed management during shifts and escalate concerns to the HOPC/ Ward Manager.

Knowledge and experience in surgical nursing, working with complex surgical patients with a vast variety of patient specialties. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide the highest standard of nursing care.

Perform all relevant nursing care with support, showing flexibility in clinical areas and providing cover according to experience.

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programs of care, actively seeking evidence-based practice which will improve the quality of care and meeting the needs of the patients.

Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, relatives and staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events, for example the cancellation of surgery or breaking bad news following Endoscopies.

Monitor and review patients TILE and progress as they move through their care journey

Escalate any issues outside of their role to the HOPC/ Ward Manager/On-Call Manager.

Manage Pharmacy stock and ensure it is replenished as needed.

Undertake clinical audits within a set timeframe.

Escalate any issues outside of their role to the HOPC/ Ward Manager/On-Call Manager.

Be able to identify and react appropriately to changing demands, situations and pressures in the department and prioritize accordingly, working as part of the team to be flexible and accommodating as appropriate, ensuring patient safety is always prioritised.

Maintain confidentiality and integrity of information in line with data protection requirements.

  • Attend all mandatory training and participate in the preceptorship program.
  • Provide support to new and junior staff as required.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive learning environment for colleagues, patients, and visitors.
  • Complete Revalidation requirements.

Staff may be required to work in different departments to assist and contribute to ongoing development.
