Job summary

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Senior Phlebotomist to join our friendly, patient-focused Outpatient Team at Melton Hospital. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is enthusiastic, compassionate, and committed to delivering high-quality care. You will play a key role in supporting both adult and paediatric services, ensuring safe and efficient blood collection while providing a reassuring and professional experience for our patients. The ideal candidate will bring strong organisational skills, excellent communication, and a flexible approach to working in a busy outpatient environment. While previous experience in both adult and paediatric phlebotomy is desirable, training and support will be provided for the right candidate.

Main duties of the job

Phlebotomy services are provided Monday to Friday across the UHL community sites.

Main Duties of the job include:

  • The taking of routine and urgent blood samples from patients attending outpatients, in accordance with UHL policy.
  • Performing blood sampling from both adult and paediatric patients.
  • To carry out the associated procedures of specimen collection.
  • To autonomously problem solve day to day issues and to work collaboratively with other senior phlebotomists, deputy sisters/charge nurses and community outpatient lead to ensure quality service provision is maintained at all sites.
  • To supervise new phlebotomy staff within their team and across the community sites. To mentor new phlebotomists/health care support workers working within phlebotomy.
  • This role does involve frequent walking, standing and bending for prolonged periods of time.

Job description

  • Managing staff when required, being the first point of call for patients and staff for any concerns or queries, Will involve clinical and admin work.
  • To effectively lead and coordinate the phlebotomy service where the post holder is assigned,
  • To support senior health care support workers and registered nurses who undertake phlebotomy within their role.
  • Ensure all records are legible and that there is adherence to confidentiality and correct record keeping within their teams.
  • Ensure statistical information is gathered and recorded as required by the operational team
  • To provide accurate records in relation any staff performance issues that may arise.
  • The supervision and induction of new phlebotomy staff within their team and across the community sites.
  • Prioritisations and allocation of workload to the team.
  • Autonomously problem solves day to day issues and works collaboratively with other senior phlebotomists, registered nurses, deputy sisters and community outpatient lead to ensure quality service provision is maintained at all sites.
  • To ensure their team work collaboratively and have the ability to resolve any conflict in a timely and professional manner.
  • First line escalation for non- standard queries and complaints.
